Did your teachers give reading levels? Ours said they don't discuss this at this point in the year. I know the teacher was pleased she is where she is but I would be curious what level she is considered.

I asked this exact question at DS's parent teacher conference one month ago. The teacher said they will not be leveling them at all this year - she said not enough kids are even close to reading. She felt maybe 3 or 4 kids at the most were reading in the class. I was surprised honestly I thought they did do reading levels in K or at least test them to see where they are at. But, this may be just my district or my DS's teacher.

This was not discussed at all during parent teacher conferences. DS said that none of the kids in his class can read.

Yes, he's at an independent A level.... He was benchmarked with the Fountas and Panell

  That is the the goal for Kindergartners to be at the end of K...they don't promote!!??

I didn't push reading in kindergarten. We read together...she read when she wanted to. I also don't believe in rote flash card as a way to teach reading. I believe that if you read with your child, they will develop the ability and love. A year later and my 1st grader is a great reader. Above average but not flying off the charts. She loves reading, writing and story telling. I do that with my 4 year old too. He is a bit more advanced then she at the same age but I attribute that to his learning from her.

Yes, DD is at a B-level on the P&F scale

They are tested often.
My cousin just withdrew her child from our school last week.
in her conference I learned a lot.
She wanted to know how her son compared to his school on staten island.
We use common core down here-not sure what they use on SI.
Teacher told her that her son's reading was on target, almost at a d level-but he needs to work on comprehension which he scored lower on.
In the beginning of the year, my boy had 3 kids in his class who were retained. By the end of the first quarter, all 3 were able to enter 1st grade.
m-thr the teacher has parent volunteers to help out-since all of her time is being consumed with testing.
I see it, they are constantly tested.
but i have to say, the majority of his class is reading...simple books, but they are reading.
They have been writing sentences from day 1. My cousin's son wasn't doing that at all-but it is part of our common core.
His teacher is over it. She says she is just killing trees with all this paperwork. that she just needs them tested in june. she said all the fun is sucked out of the room.
she constantly has conferences with some parents.
our cutoff is also in august...my cousin turned 5 in Nov...he enterted the class with kids who turned 6 back in sept. i know people say they can't see the year, and maybe it was just this kid-but that year is a huge jump. he was 4 competing with 6 yr olds

Theresa..... Did you ask her for suggestions or any documentation when she told you that? At our parent teacher conference she presented his benchmark testing, and told me his actual independent reading level. She still gave me suggestions even when she said he was right where he should be!
We asked for suggestions but we were already doing what she said (reading with him nightly, sight words, etc.). She didn't offer any documentation but she said only 2 kids in a class of 25 are reading above where they should be. Honestly, he is my first one in school so I'm learning as we go as well. My issues with his teacher have more to do with her lack of communication regarding some incidents that happened and how she handled them.
