Torn ACL
My cocker spaniel tore his acl last night. We took him to the vet today where they did X-rays and stuff. Basically, is there any other treatment besides surgery? My dog is 10 and as a heart murmur so if I don't have to put him under I'd rather not. TIA!

Re: Torn ACL
poor baby :( one of mine tore both sides and had to have a surgery on each but was young and has a full life to go--so that was the best choice
how much does your dog weigh---there are 2 types of surgery--one is tplo and the other is like a rubber band (usually cheaper and used for smaller dogs). My pup got 2 tplo due to size. It was a big surgery and a long recovery but, my pup is able to run again-so for me-well worth it---the chance of the other side tearing now will increase for your pup :(
what vet did you go to--i have a great one--FM me if you want their info
good luck w/your decision the acl cannot repair itself on its own---is she limping? in pain?

Torn ACL
Thanks. He's weighs about 35 pounds, slightly overweight but he's also 10. He is limping but doesn't seem in pain. Our vet is Crawford in Lynbrook, the younger one went to Cornell and he's the one that performs the surgery. I'm just nervous about my baby and the recovery time and the cost. The was seriously the last thing we needed with everything else we have going on.

glucosamine is a great supplement for joints and fish oil acts as a natural anti-inflammatory--these might help a little bit also, losing weight will help-mine went on a diet-a few pounds on us is different than a few pounds on a dog! right now, make sure he does not do stairs too much or jump or run around the yard...rest is important is he typically an active 10 yr. old?

we do glucosamine in tablets and treats. He stayed at my parents last night bc they have a ranch so it's easier for him to get out to potty. he HATES fish oil, hates it. he's not very active bc he has problems with all his joints. Probably the cause and effect of being a puppy mill puppy (I assume, he was a rescue) so he has a heart murmur and his hips have always been a bit of an issue so we were told to not push him too much. He LOVES to go for leisurely strolls, but if he tries to keep up with other dogs he has to stop and cough and sit :( We'll probably be scheduling the surgery soon bc he also somehow messed up his knee. And this was ON a leisurely walk after I got home from work, it just popped...oy

Torn ACL
so we had the surgery and he was in therapy for the weekend. I wish we had a larger tub or pool so we could "float" him the way they did but we don't. They said he was a champ and told us to limit exercise, no jumping up or down and to flex his joint 2 times a day. I'm so glad he's home! It was a very quiet weekend!
