marathon training plan question
is there a plan out there that covers 26 or more miles DURING the training. it seems that all the plans i'm finding only go up to 20 miles and then taper off before the race.
since it will be my first, i want to make sure i cover the distance before actually being at the event.
thanks

Re: marathon training plan question
Most of what I have read strongly recommends that people running their first marathon do not train more than 20-22 miles in training. Wisdom being that the actual benefits from running the distance are negated from the actual risk of injury and stress on your body. Since long runs are run at a slower pace, your body will be running for quite a bit longer and that is a lot of stress, especially if its your first time.
I ran 21 miles for my first and I didn't hit the wall and had a great race.

Re: marathon training plan question
Nope. 20 miles is the most you do with any plan.
I believe there are a few reasons for this. I'm positive it works (and I won't be doing more than 20 this summer!)

right, i agree with this.. i think the longest i've seen was maybe 22? honestly for all the marathons i've run the most i did was 20 and it was totally fine..the last 6 miles is blood sweat and tears (sometimes! ) i don't think pushing it for a training run is necessary. you will totally be able to finish that last 6 miles b/c your body is conditioned and the whole race atmosphere will propel you along. your body will be taxed enough with the training and you want to show up to the starting line as fresh as possible.
