gas lines in neighborhood
is there a way to find out if there are gas lines in your neighborhood?
we are under contract with a new house - and are planning on remodeling the kitchen prior to moving in. we would love gas appliances and eventually to convert to gas completely. right now the appliances are electric - any way for me to find out if gas is nearby?
also - the nassau country land record viewer is showing fuel type as "oil/gas" - does that mean there already is a gas line in the house??

Call National Grid--give them the address and they'll tell you.

Re: gas lines in neighborhood
The best thing to do is call National Grid and find out where the closest gas lines are (just give the address of the house). I always advise clients to do this, if conversion to gas is important to them, even before they make an offer.
National Grid will charge by the foot to bring the gas line to your house (if it's further than a certain # of feet away, I believe 100 feet). So even if it's on the street, if it's at the other end of the block, it can be quite expensive to bring it down to your house.
As far as whether there is a gas line in the house, is there gas anything? dryer? fireplace? etc? You can always just ask the current owners or your home inspector (or even review the report). You would probably already know if there was a gas line, as it's a selling point that would have been brought up and your inspector probably would have noted it.
Even if there is a gas line to the house, sometimes it does take some work to convert to gas heat. A gas line to a stove, for example, may be small and may be on the other side of the house. But it is still going to be a lot less expensive than piping it down the street.
