Re: Treatment in luxury stores
I dare a salesperson to treat me poorly when I am spending thousands
I was recently at Hermes on a sale day by accident- I yelled out I want to pay full price for a bracelet and the sales people raced to help me and we were all laughing
I know I "look" the part.....I am good at looking way richer then I actually am

Re: Treatment in luxury stores
I wish I had my DH's attitude. He'll walk into a luxury department store in a ripped tee and workboots if he needs to buy something. He doesn't give a crap what people think about him. Me, I feel the need to get dolled up to go shopping, which is kind of ridiculous. (When I used to use La Mer products, I would have my DH stop at Saks and buy it for me because I hated dealing with the SAs. )
I despise many luxury retailers. Partly for the employees and partly for their pretentious clientele.
I was in Bloomingdales at Walt Whitman almost a year ago, which I don't consider high-end/luxury, and I couldn't get over how snooty the sales associates were. I left without buying anything and I haven't been back since. I'm assuming they're just hourly employees who are not on commission and just have plain old attitudes in general.
I don't want someone kissing my a$s and I'm not looking for a "relationship" with an SA. I just want someone to be professional and courteous without giving me the once over.
So I spend my money at the Apple store. They're happy to help me spend my money on their products regardless of how I'm dressed.

Re: Treatment in luxury stores
I haven't been treated badly that i can recall, but i do usually feel very uncomfortable in high end stores. Like i don't belong and they're all looking at me!
I did stand there at the VS in Manhasset once and literally said out loud - can any of you help me, i want to spend money! Because not one of the sales people standing around had come over to me to offer help in the 10 minutes i was browsing.

I completely agree! I have been buying luxury items since I was a teenager (my parents got me a Neiman Marcus credit card at 17) and have NEVER felt the need to form a relationship with the sales person. I am there to shop not make friends. They are the ones working retail and I am the one shopping. The end.

Its all about forming relationships.
You should not have to form a relationship to shop. If a sales person is snotty or profiles a client they are failing to do their job well. It is the sales person's JOB to treat the people shopping with RESPECT.
Seriously! This isn't YOUR job, you are giving them business/commission. Eff them, they should be going out of their way to make you feel comfortable.
Also, not for nothing, but where do they come off thinking they're so elite? You're selling clothes, not doing rocket science or brain surgery.

I've never been treated badly - I have gotten attitude .......it immediately stops b/c I find someone else to help me - I refuse to give a commission check to an a$$hole - refuse.
My attitude is "I am SPENDING money here, YOU are working here for a paycheck ........so WHO exactly are YOU to be looking down your nose at me? For all you know I could have a trust fund the size of China"
same here
I don't shop in high end stores often I have WINDOW shopped at many and gotten attitude
The one time I got a lot of attitude in LV I found another person to help me, she didn't appreciate that I was only looking to buy a speedy--I ended up getting something more $$ AND wallet--so THERE bitchass

totally and honestly not all people can form relationships in stores where it costs 1k and up to buy a bag or shoe--so that means if you only shop there once or twice you should be treated like shit bc of it?

The people who 'form relationships' with the sales STAFF are the people who are responsible for the majority of that STAFF PERSON's paycheck - Don't delude yourself, you're not friends. Um, of course they are going to remember you and treat you fabulously, you're a regular !!!
That is completely missing the point, which is, regardless of how a person shows up to go shopping (all dressed up or not) you have zero clue what they are spending and what's in their bank account, and who the hell are YOU as an employee to be turning yoru nose up at anyone who's there spending money?
You don't need the commission check from my $3k purchase? Well, great, I'll find someone who does.

Treatment in luxury stores
I don't shop in high end stores and don't think I even been in one. Lord & Taylor, Nieman Marcus probably my high end lol. I'm more an express, h&m gal.
With that said I worked at the limited in college for 3 years and was treated like sh!t and looked down on cause I was working in retail. A lot of snobs shopping with husband and daddy's credit card.
One time a lady was being such a witch because I was trying to help her with her coupons. How are are you acting like a snob when you are using coupons and shopping at the Limited? Lol She had said something along the lines of "you're just a cashier". I couldn't take it any more and basically told her something like "I'm just a cashier who is smarter than you and is going to college to get two degrees. You can't even do simple math to be a cashier. "
They took me off the register after that

I just love the fact that people who are working a job in a retail store have the utter balls to look down on anyone. Really? You WORK for the store, you don't own it. I don't even shop in those places but I probably am making double what you make. Get over yourself.

Re: Treatment in luxury stores
I remember a few times going into Express and Victoria's Secret and having to deal with snobby salespeople.
And this was at Sunrise Mall, which we all know is not the high end mall of the area.
With that said though, I would never look down at someone working in retail. A job is a job, especially in this economy.

I actually know several SAHMs who have gone into retail for a few shifts a week to help from losing their minds being home with the kids all the time.
And these are women who have Master's degrees and significant work history.

That's horrible. I worked at that VS when I was in high school. If anyone of us ever gave a customer attitude, that would have been the end of that employee. To answer the OP, I generally avoid high-end stores, mostly due to lack of interest. I have noticed more attitude at the LV counter in Macy's than at the actual shop in Manhasset, which really struck me as odd.

I know, I worked at Limited (see previous post) and we had to kiss their ass, even if they were just buying a pair of socks. If not we got in trouble.

Re: The Americana.
I work down the street from there and many of my co-workers shop there. Trust me, we're not millionaires.
I think they do target a lot of the local hospital employees (not just doctors ) and I also notice a lot of people take the bus there too, so I am guessing they aren't rolling in dough if they are taking the bus.

Having worked in retail back in college AND having been a SAHM for many years now, I cannot imagine going back to retail in order to get away from the kids. I applaud retail employees who manage to be friendly and courteous, because sometimes it's HARD. Even on their worst day, I swear my kids are 1000x more pleasant to be with than the total b!tches I encountered in retail
