Grieving Taxes

Has anyone ever done this? We leave in a 3 bed / 1 bath cape and our proprty taxes are almost 11k. Chat Icon

Thinking of hiring one of the companies to grieve for us. Not sure who is the best.

Re: Grieving Taxes

We bought a house that was already in the process of grieving. They signed up with All Island. We knew this house was WAY overassessed so it was definitely worth it to us. We saved A LOT on our taxes. All Island's fee is half of what we saved, but again, it was definitely worth it to us.

Grieving Taxes

We did with Mark Lewis. We saved about $1400 a year. It was well worth it.

Grieving Taxes

We did it ourselves and it was not that difficult. We contacted our real estate agent and he gave us comps for the area.

Grieving Taxes

You can grieve them yourself. All a company does is full out the paper for you. Go online and do it yourself and save the $$$

How do you find the forms? I've been searching but don't know what to look for?

Our town (and/or county) had the paperwork online.

Re: Grieving Taxes

The Town of Islip does not currently have their grievance forms online. I believe they do publish them online closer to grievance period. If they do not, you can get the forms on the State's website.

Grievance time in the Town of Islip is May 1 through the 3rd Tuesday of the month. You can only file your application during that time period, and if you miss it, your assessment is deemed correct and you must wait until next year.

Unfortunately, just because you're paying $11K in taxes, doesn't mean you're over assessed. You must take your assessment and divide it by the Residential Assessment Ratio (RAR). This year for the Town of Islip, it's 13.20%. That will give you the market value the Town is using for your home. Using my assessment and the RAR, Islip is valuing my home at $284,090 - basically waaaaaaaay under what it's worth and what we paid for it - so I am not over assessed.
