What could be wrong with my dog?

We have a Labrador who is just over a year old. He's been crated since he was a puppy. Never had accidents in his crate, ever. We have a very small ranch house. Last Sunday we put our tree up and his crate is where the tree goes. So we had to move his crate into the guest bedroom, right down the hallway. The first night, we left the house for a few hours to get dinner. When we got back he had pooped in his crate. We chalked it up to him being anxious that his crate was moved. So, we worked with him and the crate (putting treats in there, encouraging him go in the crate and check it out when we were home). He had no issues Monday and Tuesday when we were at work. Then Wednesday I get home from work and he pooped (solid and liquid this time) and peed in the crate. Then no issues Thursday and Friday. Then I left for an hour and a half this afternoon and came home to a pooped filled crate (and covered dog).

I should add he's been a little funny about his food for about 2 1/2 weeks. Some days Leaving his breakfast all day until late at night. I have not changed his food. Now this morning he started "coughing". Nothing comes up. Just a cough.

He is not fixed yet. Could that be part of it?

What could this be about? Take him to the vet?

I would take him to the vet. He might have a little bit of a stomach bug, especially if there was diarrhea.

What do you feed him? Our food was recalled for Salmonella poisoning months ago, it's very common and could cause stomach upset. Something picked up on a walk.

I don't think him not being fixed has anything to do with it. We fixed our first Lab at about 13 months old.

Coughing + loose stool doesn't sound good. I'd save a 1 inch piece of poop, bring it to the vet so they can do a parasite test, and see if he's got a respiratory infection or kennel cough.

My dog started coughing a few days ago and we found out he has an enlarged heart. He's 11 though. Right before the cough he had some stomach issues. It's probably not the same thing but I would take him to the vet just in case.
