Re: talk to me about Game of Thrones
So far, 5 books. I know he's planning to do 7 books, not sure if he plans to do more. At this rate, he'll probably keel over before he finishes them (It's usually 4 or 5 years between books).
It's very involved and there are tons of characters in very different places all around the world and they have some similar names so it gets confusing. I personally LOVE the story, but I'm into the whole fantasy genre. It's similar to Lord of the Rings, though I find it easier to read- it just flows better.
I've only read the first three books, but I plan to continue the series. It's just that they are long and bloody and I always feel the need to take a break after each book.

Re: talk to me about Game of Thrones
It's SO good. The first book was the slowest for me, I flew through book 3 and have yet to start 4 & 5 bc I love them so much and don't want to finish them and have to wait for 6...although I plan to start 4 ASAP so the show doesn't spoil it for me. I was shocked by how hooked I got!

Re: talk to me about Game of Thrones
I HATE fantasy and I absolutely LOVE the GoT books.
It can get confusing so I recommend buying the actual book and not getting it on a device. I would have had an easier time being able to flip back and forth.

Yeah, I have to read 4 before watching the new season! I really needed a break after that last one though, it was a doozy! And I hear that book 4 is all new characters so it slows down a little again.

Re: talk to me about Game of Thrones
I too hate Fantasy and love the Game of Thrones. The tv series got me hooked and then I read the books (all five of them). I am currently rereading all of the books. I am almost done with book 3. The reread is great because you pick up so much more that you'd missed reading the first go round.
For those who want to read book four before the show comes back on just know that the show is generally based on the second half of book three. There will be some overlap with books 4 and 5 but the majority of the show will come from book 3.

Ahhh! Good to know! I still haven't watched season 3 (no HBO ) but I pre-ordered the DVDs! So first week in February I can catch up on the show, too. I mean I know what happens, but I've still been sticking my fingers in my ears for months.

Re: talk to me about Game of Thrones
My favorite. Books. Ever! They're are the books upon which all other books are judged for me. They're huge books, but I read all 5 in a matter of weeks because I loved them so much!

After being spoiled a few times from the show, I won't take anymore chances bc the books are so much better! My brother was the one who warned me that the preview from this coming season seems to jump a bit!

Re: talk to me about Game of Thrones
i'll be the odd one out.
I don't like them. Took me forever to get through the first 3 and then I kind of stopped. There are too many characters (some pointless), the story is too drawn out, and the genres are too mixed up.
I would never consider this fantasy. It doesn't have enough fantasy elements for me, and the ones it does have seem plugged in just for the sake of it. can't call it historical fiction because there are too many elements which are just plain made up.
the beginning of book 4 is what really turned me off to the series. what he did with a main character, whom i liked, felt very wrong. have yet to pick it up and get past it.

Re: talk to me about Game of Thrones
I literally was about to start a thread asking this same question and figured I couldn't be the only one asking, and sure enough, looked down and here it was!
It's amazing the difference in responses you get on goodreads. People either loved it so much they read it a billion times and named their kids after the characters (joke) or hated it so, so much they wished the author was never born but people on Goodreads can get kind of crazy, so I came on here. My friends also were so diverse with their responses.
I literally read the first 2 chapters as a test run and am still going to stick with it, but it really does pull you into a whole new world and reality that is different than what I am used to reading. It's been a while since my LOTR days (high school. But I want to revisit them) but it kind of reminds me of that kind of world.
Let me know what you think....ll would love to have a discussion on it here from time to time!

I'm about 1/4 into the 4th book. I'm one of those who love GoT and got seriously sucked in. I did watch season one of the show before reading so book 1 was a little boring to me. Books 2&3 completely made up for that and book 4 is equally good!
I feel the books have a bit of everything...and the plot twists are sometimes so shocking I literally had to put the book down and text my brother a WTF (he's the one who convinced me to read them!) Hope you enjoy!

If you can stay away from spoilers, you are going to be in for a real treat. This author truly keeps readers on their toes!
