HSG... Ouch

Had an HSG done today and it definitely hurt a little bit more than the water sono I had a few months ago. I had taken Motrin before I went too. I am beyond furious with my RE and I'm not sure if its justified, My tubes are completely blocked. I have asked the drs before if there were any tests I should go for or anything else I should try. He only recommended the HSG because we're thinking of going back to iui after the last failed ivf. I feel like I have wasted a year of my life not to mention thousands of dollars, waiting and hoping every month to get that bfp all the while my tubes are friggin blocked up. I am mid cycle with the stims after this cycle if it doesn't work I think I need to break up with my re.

Re: HSG... Ouch

wow, I'm so sorry. I agree with you it does hurt, at least for me it did. I can't believe they waited a year to do this. This was one of the first things I was tested for. I gotta tell you I got my pos that very month. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. Unfortunately it didn't work out because I have other issues. There's no way an iui would work if your tubes are blocked. Who is your RE?

Sorry the HSG was painful - that was most likely because of your blocked tubes

I would be annoyed as well. That was one of the first test both of my REs did. I thought it was standard practice.

HSG... Ouch

I was not a fan either. It wasn't painful, but it was more mental and if I wasn't laying down I would have passed out.

My re office required I had that done before I started any medicated cycle with them. RMA...

Oh man, I'm so sorry. This was the most painful for me also. Thank goodness it didn't last long.

I wonder why they didn't order this test in the beginning. I would totally be very annoyed too!!! That's usually part of the work up in the beginning.

Sorry, the HSG hurt me a lot, too, and I had no blockages, so I can't imagine.

I'm sorry your tubes were blocked, and not sure why they wouldn't have done that test sooner. However, a failed IVF likely had nothing to do with the blocked tubes since IVF bypasses your tubes entirely.

Re: HSG... Ouch

I totally get your frustration I would be beyond upset. Sorry your dealing with this. I agree about taking a break from your RE it just doesn't make sense why he wouldn't have done this test before treating you. My RE wouldn't even let me start my first cycle if I didn't have this test done first. Luckily my OB was on top of things and had sent me for it a month before seeing my RE. I don't think the pain you experience is so much related to whether or not your tubes are blocked because I experienced excrutiating pain and my tubes were completely open. I tend to spasms alot during any of these invasive procedures so I'm assuming that has more to do with it.

I'm honestly surprised they didn't order this test for you a long time ago. I go to RSoNY too, and my only issue when I started was irregular periods, and she wouldn't even let me start the process until I had an HSG. I'm so sorry that they didn't follow this protocol with you. I would be pizzed if I were you, and demand an explanation. And there are plenty of doctors to see there... maybe you could switch to a new one in the practice if the location/hours are still best for you?

BTW I'm with you - my tubes were open but it was one of the most painful procedures of my life. They couldn't find their way through one tube for some reason, and kept trying and trying for what felt like 20 minutes. I remember thinking that if I could get through it, I could get through labor (and I did... and labor didn't hurt more than the HSG until I was a good 7 cm dilated!).

Re: HSG... Ouch

Sung always orders that in the first group of tests. I'm guesstimating you have Trivax? I have heard other girls complaining about him not ordering it in the initial testing and wasting time. One of my tubes were blocked also so I'm glad I had it. We are going straight to IVF now.

I see Trivax, really I see all the drs which is irritating when you get so many diff opinions from the drs. I'm not looking forward to getting that test again

Yes they all work differently there!
I am at SIRM now and like the direct patient care better. The Dr has personally called and emailed me a few times already and we haven't even started a cycle yet. Very different than RS.

SOrry to hear that. I am not sure when you did IVF but since you paid out of pocket which I think you did, you can deduct on taxes on medical. It has to be 7% of gross income. Which IVF usuaally is.

Have you gotten pregnant previously without IVF??

We are seeing the RE to get pregnant again (after having my twins). Dr. Stelling said because the HSG is not fun and I got pregnant last time around then most likely my tubes are still clear. (But I did have an HSG in 2011 when I started IF treatment the first time.) He said if IUI doesn't work after 2-3 months, we would probably have to do HSG to be sure. He left the decision up to me though.

Sorry you are having a rough time. Chat Icon Chat Icon

HSG... Ouch

The farthest I've gotten is a chemical around sept. After this ivf cycle dr. Saketos suggested maybe going for a tubal cannulation if it doesn't work. Too many things we all have to go through
