Oil or Gas
Which in your opinion would be better, upgrading my existing old Oil burner or putting in a new Gas furnace?
There is already a gas line on the street so that's not an issue.
The difference in price is not that much, does gas have a better appeal when you go to sell?
Trying to decide which way I should go.
Thanks for your opinions.

For me, gas has a greater appeal. We bought a house with oil & have spent $1600 in oil since December so converting to gas is on our to do list.

I have had both. I would never ever ever go back to oil. Yes gas is cheaper and a plus when selling.

When we were house hunting, we preferred houses that had gas so I would say it's good for resale value for when you eventually want to sell

Gas! We converted from oil to gas right after we bought our house and I cannot imagine how much money we would have blown through this winter if we hadn't switched.

Gas is much better for resale. So many buyers want gas, ask about whether it's in the house, street, etc. it is considered an upgrade, for sure.
Plus, I personally have gas and it's much more convenient... Love having a natural gas BBQ, and you never run out!

I've had oil for over 10 years. Never thought about it before buying.
It's extremely expensive. In January and February, I'm spending $600 per month to heat our home (1600 ish square feet) while my friends spend $150 per month with natural gas.
I would LOVE to convert but my neighbors won't. I need them to agree to extend the gas line otherwise National Grid wants $22,000.

We converted several years ago and never looked back. Cheaper. Runs cleaner. And never worry about deliveries

When we were looking to buy, gas was high on the priority list. For the perfect house we would have been willing to convert if it were in the street, but already having gas was a huge plus.

Gas is much cheaper. My neighbor who has an identical home to us paid almost triple for oil last year compared to what we paid for gas. When we were house hunting gas was one of our musts.

We probably will eventually convert to gas for cost and because I do prefer a gas stovetop.
However, some pro-oil points just to keep in your head is that the oil companies are extremely responsive to any heating emergency (will be there within hours) and they are willing to take full responsibility for repairs having to do with heating.
The gas companies can be more finicky, take longer, insist you get a plumber (which is more expensive).
Plus I'm not going to lie, I know everyone says gas nowadays is safe, but you still hear of accidents and explosions...

Gas all the way. We have it now and while looking to move recently, gas was a requirement. During hurricane Sandy we had no electricity for 9 days but had all hot showers and cooked all meals on the stove!

I think it's always good to have a maintenance contract on a heating system, be it gas or oil. We have gas, but we've always had a maintenance contract (we are going to switch to Universe in Seaford now, love them in general for appliance repair, CAC, etc). But for a gas heating system, the maintenance contracts work the same... the contracts specify that there is x amount of time to respond to an emergency call.

We converted, spent close 12k to do so but have saved so much this winter and it will pay for itself in a couple years that is how much more oil is!

This! The repairs if you have a maintenance agreement are no different than if you had oil. And yes it is a plumber but they are different plumbers that work on gas line and water waste lines......usually. Getting repairs without a contract is no different if you have oil or gas....you will pay by the repair and no guaranteed response time.

Same here.
I love gas.
The man who owned my house before me converted and it was the number one selling feature when I bought it. And made the house very in demand in the area because the area is 95% oil. Only the few people who converted have gas so it's a big plus.
It's the best to cook with too. I mean, it really makes a difference. It's cleaner, it's cheaper.
Yeah, love it.

Thanks everyone for your response. I have some months before I need to make my decision oil contract is not up until the end of October.
It's a big expense, but I do have an old oil burner and what I don't want to happen is it crap out on me in the dead of winter.

Definitely gas. No doubt. We had oil in our prior house. It was so much more expensive, dirty, a pain in the butt with deliveries. Right before we moved, a tube cracked in our system and we had an oil spill in our basement!!! Caused thousands and thousands of dollars of damage. I hate oil. And gas has been great here in our new house. Cleaner, cheaper, less hassle. I love our gas cooking and fireplace too.

I am 100% gas. When we purchased recently, we considered homes with oil but negatively figured the cost of conversion into what we considered the home was worth. Meaning we would have offered a significantly lower amount to an identical oil home vs gas. It was a major deciding factor for us as buyers. Not everyone agrees with me but that's my opinion as a home buyer
