gas vs. oil heat...
I know this has been discussed before...
We have oil heat with an old burner/boiler but only use approx 750 gallons per season to heat our house. We recently signed an oil contract with Lewis Oil at $3.89 cap.
I have heard that it costs approx $5k to do a conversion...is that accurate? Including removal of oil tank... We can not just change the burner on our boiler we were told it is too old and we would need an entirely new boiler/burner combo...
If you have Gas heat how much is your monthly Keyspan bill during the winter? I have heard that it can get very high and you need to go on a budget plan. Currently we are able to pay our oil deliveries as we go and have several OFF MONTHS during the summer which is nice.
Just trying to get an idea as we are thinking of finishing our basement over the winter...
Thanks!!!

Re: gas vs. oil heat...
It cost us $7k, but we had to have the gas line run for our dry and for the stove upstairs. We also put in some new baseboard heating downstairs. Our highest bill last year, for a Hi-Ranch, 2 zone house, there is only two of us living there, it cost $250 one month. That was the highest it went last year. We did move in the house in Nov., so we were there for the coldest months. HTH!

Re: gas vs. oil heat...
I am in the process right now of converting. I had the same issue with the older equipment and was burning through oil, only running at 73% efficiency, etc.. and I really could not deal anymore with Oil Companies, prices going up, down etc...
It is costing me $4900, but we were just told we need a Water Heater also so will be another $500 or so.
I can't wait!

Re: gas vs. oil heat...
our gas bills during the winter run around $300 a month. its a 2 family house. We use gas for heat/hot water and the dryer. During the summer months it around $50.
You do not have to go on a budget with National Grid not sure if you are looking into a different company

Re: gas vs. oil heat...
I have a 2 family house that is a 3 over 3 BR house. I think it's about 2800 square feet total. Our tenants pay their own gas bill. We have the larger portion of the house and we are on a budget. The highest bill we have ever had was $64/month and the lowest was $53. BUT we are upstairs so their heat rises up to us so we keep the heat on very low all winter.
