Changing from DOE to Long Island

I started a position in a nice DOE school in Queens this fall. I had looking to make the move for awhile from the private school that I had been in the last few years. I am happy at my current school and commute is doable.

I see some positions on OLAS for my speciality and was thinking of applying to see what happens. I could mostly likely get granted tenure in the DOE in a few years. Is it true that schools on Long Island are really getting rid of people before it's time for tenure? I'm a speech pathologist.

No it isn't true across the board. It's disheartening that some schools have a bad reputation for this. Please apply...you deserve it

Thanks. I should apply and see what happens. After being unhappy at work for awhile, I'm finally happy at my school now. But maybe I'll find something even better.

I think you have a better chance of getting into a school on LI as an SLP for sure! Good luck!

I'm an OT, hired by a SD on LI. I've been at this SD for 8 years. Our job security depends on "the numbers" and "need" for our services. It's mostly driven by classified student services, IEPs/504s, but building level services are also factored in.

I am literally the EXACT same situation as you- I saw alot of special ed positions on OLAS and decided to apply. You can interview if they call you, and then if you get the job you have the opportunity to say no which is nice. Do alot of research on the school, see if they pass on their budget, things like that
