First RE appointment

I have my first RE appointment in 2 weeks and I'm not sure what to expect. I assume they will do an ultrasound and maybe blood on me. DH will need an SA- do you think he can do it during the appointment?

My appointment will be on CD10 of my cycle. Obviously we can't start that cycle, but I'm really hoping we can start the following cycle. What do you girls think?

Thank you all Chat Icon

First RE appointment

The first appt is usually just a history and talk through everything. They then will order a tons of different tests. When I went I knew it would probably be a cycle or two before I started. I had also had most f the testing done already because I went to on Dr I hated and moved on after testing and I had a few prelim tests done with my Gyn.

Re: First RE appointment

I had a sonogram and blood work at my first visit to the RE.

I am sure your DH could do the SA at that time, but he may need a referral from his primary care doctor for them to cover it.

Re: First RE appointment

At my first appointment we went over our history, they did blood work on me and DH, and a sonogram on me - which showed that I had PCOS. They gave us all the info on medicated cycles vs. medicated IUIs and a little bit of info on IVF. They then gave me a prescription for an HSG and sent us home with a container for DH to do his SA (he didn't want to do it in the office.)

I didn't start on any medications until we got the results of the HSG and blood work.

Wishing you lots of luck!!

Re: First RE appointment

Usually the first appointment you go over your history and blood is taken. I've been to North Shore Human Reproduction as well as RS of NY.

At NS due to my history I had to see a Maternal Fetal Medicine doc before getting any type of "clearance" to do IVF since I had a clotting issue. I went for a consult at NS in April and didn't start my cycle until July( had to see the MFM, DH had to do a semen analysis, then a follow up consult to go over all results).

At RS of NY after my initials consult I was able to start ASAP (but didn't) due to my records being sent from NS and numerous failed cycles at NS(conceived naturally in the past now have no functioning tubes)the RE was comfortable with getting started.

If you're doing IUIs you could start probably in 2 cycles(S.A, HSG, and some other testing) is usually done to determine why you haven't been able to conceive on your own. Hopefully they can determine the issue to tree how to proceed.(IUIs or IVF).

Good Luck

Thank you all so much. I'm hoping they can get a lot done quickly, but I suppose I don't have much control over that!

I'm going to Cornell....anyone have experience there?

Cornell is run very similar to Columbia from what I hear. I went to Columbia and they def have a list of tests that need to be done first. And HSG is a must and can only be done at a certain time of the month.

I know at LIIVF he needed a special appointment to do it because they only do it at certain times a day. Your husband may also be more comfortable doing it at home and bringing in a sample.

Re: First RE appointment

First appointment is a lot of talking, medical history, etc. I had bloodwork and sono done too because I believe I was on CD 3. Good luck! I know for me making that appointment was very hard but walking out of it I felt a little more empowered and in charge. Chat Icon
