Is it fair for a 6th grade math teacher to give a practice state test and count that grade towards the students' overall grade (as an exam/quiz/project)?
This was a booklet given over spring break.
Exams are 60% of overall grade

My son's teacher has done this, but he was given advanced notice and they called it a "take home test". But it said that it was a practice state test on it.

When I taught I was expected to give a packet over break- and I usually used old state exams. And they did count- substantially. I did this because if it didn't count for something they would not have done it at all AND I wanted it to be worth something as they were putting in a lot of effort. I don't find it unreasonable.

Re: Opinion needed
The teacher did not tell the students or parents (she emailed us) that this will be counted as an exam. She said "review assignment". That's part of my dispute. I don't understand: if State tests are just that 3 days of testing why test them with more State tests?

I teach high school math so I guess maybe my perspective is different but any assignment I give, especially over a break, will be graded. So i don't understand the confusion. And if I give an assignment over break it's usually a regents exam or regents questions

It's an assignment and therefore can be graded. Students need to review topics and whether they believe it will be graded or not, should do their best on all of their work.

Re: Opinion needed
Thanks I get what you are all saying now. I guess with all the State testing controversy I didnt like that a practice state test should be considered in the regular classroom grade.
