Flat feet/ankle turning in
DS is almost 4. He started EI at 18 months because he was not walking. Had (still does to a degree) low tone. He has flat feet and his ankles turn in. I took him to an orthropedist last year who said he was "fine" and it was still developmentally appropriate. I have seen no improvement. His former PT (who is now working with my other child) noticed his feet the other day and recommended that he see a podiatrist for a cookie or orthotic.
Has anyone dealt with this? Did it go away or did you have to intervene with something in the shoe, special shoes, braces? I am knock kneed and so self conscious -- wonder if he is going to have the same issue. The orthropedist i went to, while highly recommended, was not too helpful. Kept saying it was normal for his age.... but at what point is it not normal. KWIM?
I am in Huntington area, but will travel for someone good. Any recs?
Thanks.....

Try Dr. semel (Physiatrist) at St Charles. She is fabulous. It sounds like a little insert in the shoe will help him, my DD needs a patty bob insert from Dafo. She will thoroughly evaluate him and prescribe something if needed.

Flat feet/ankle turning in
My 4 year old son has the same thing and his PT really wanted him to have orthotics or insert for his shoes. We went to the orthopedist for a prescription and he said it wasn't necessary and just get good sneakers. I found out after the fact that he tends to me anti-orthotics. Did you see Gaffney by any chance?

We see Ron Lewis- pediatric orthopedist- we see him in Bethpage but he also has an office in Huntington . My little guy also has flat feet with ankles turning in and is low tone- his pt suggested orthotics and he's been wearing them for two years now

I saw Dr. Lewis and all he did was have his office person print out some about fermul (sp?) Anti version and sent us on our way. Does he do orthodics? Not sure I should go back to him.

Flat feet/ankle turning in
DD had the same issues, low tone, flat feet, and ankles turning in. Her orthopedist never mentioned any of it though. It was pointed out by her PT when she was around 2. She just turned 3 and her feet have definitely improved as far as I can see. We just had a follow up with the ortho and I asked him to take a look and he said she looked good. Maybe try a podiatrist if the PT thinks it's necessary. I think DD's PT said their feet are still developing until about age 5 so I don't know if I would take that as he has another year to improve on his own or you should jump on it now before the major development is complete.

I don't have experience with this from the parent perspective, but I have flat feet and have worn orthotics for almost 30 years. The first doctor my mother took me to put me in shoes with a bar in them to try to create an arch in my foot. All those did was given me blisters. When my mother brought this to the doctor's attention, he said just put bandaids on them on put the shoes back on me. Needless to say, she never took me back to that doctor. I started with orthotics after that and have never had a problem since. The "worst" thing for me is that I can't wear shoes without support (flat heeled shoes) or any that don't have some sort of straps (pumps don't stay on my feet between them being flat and narrow). The flatness has never gone away, but I walk and run just fine and was very athletic growing up.

We see Gaffney. My son has worn braces (AFO) since he started to walk. He is now 3 1/2 & we are done with EI. We went to Gaffney to get new prescription & told us to STOP wearing them. I am pretty upset as I feel they really help my son. Gaffney told him to just wear a night brace. We are going to CHOP (children hosp of Philadelphia) in July. I hope we get prescription again but also going to see if they will give my son offiical diagnosis.

My son is 21/2 flat feet low tone pronated feet plus his right foot turns inward. We went to physiatrist... I live in westchester... She's supposed to be the best... He now wears orthotics in his new balance sneakers ...plus physical therapy... I def feel it's making a difference.

i did make an appointment with a highly recommended pediatric physiatrist. Unfortunately, I have to wait until September for the appointment! i am also getting him re-evaluated for physical therapy (he tested out once he turned 3).
