Weed Help! Does anyone do their own gardening?
What do you use to get rid of weeds growing in your grass? What about the weeds inside flower beds?
Would love an organic solution if possible since we have kids.

Re: Weed Help! Does anyone do their own gardening?
The best thing I ever did was hire Turf-n-Tology
WEBSITE LINK
Basically, when I had my house (I'm now in a condo) but anyway, when I had my house and I moved in I took one look at the grass and was like OMG where do I begin? It was all weeds, crabgrass, and crap.
The man across the street's lawn looked like Disney World. I went over and asked him what he does. He said, he hired Turf-n-Tology. I was like Dear GOD how much is that going to cost? But, to my delight, it was relatively inexpensive... and a downright bargain compared to shit you would buy at Home Depot to combat weeds on your own.
Barry is great, he comes and assesses your lawn for free and tells you what he thinks you will need and then he comes, about four or five times a year and treats the lawn -- it was between $45 - $65 each time he came. It worked out to around $230 - $275 FOR THE YEAR - total that I was laying out. So, I figured I could swing like $250 or so annually, spread out into payments as I only paid each time he came and treated my lawn.
I know he has kid-friendly and animal-friendly products. I know that he is lovely to work with and very nice. And I know that after maybe three or four treatments there was a noticeable difference in my lawn and I was thrilled -- then, after about a year my lawn looked beautiful and then after that I kept using him to keep it staying beautiful.
Love!

Wow dani, that sounds great! I am going to talk to DH about calling them. Did you take care of the mowing, raking, etc, part of lawn care on your own? I feel like if I can have these guys handle my weed issues, I can take care the rest.

I know it's not for the areas you mentioned, but if you have areas that you don't want any plants, like driveways, sidewalks, rock gardens, etc. Give the kids spray bottles with vinegar, water, and a little dish soap (the recipe can vary, and there are other variations on-line). This is what I do. it gives the kids something to do, it's pretty effective at killing plants (of all types), and if they get it on them, it's basically salad dressing (you can leave the soap totally out of it. The soap just helps the mixture cling to the weeds).
Vinegar does kill pretty much all plants, so it's not good for randomly spraying around plants you want to keep. An adult could be careful enough in the garden, but definitely not kids.

Thanks for the tip. We are "going green" with our landscape this year and this is great!

i tried this but it didnt work and its because it has to be done in the morning, so that the sun "bakes" the weeds all day! i may not have added soap, either :)

I've been doing it for a couple of years now. it definitely works. You may need to adjust the amount of vinegar, and how much you spray, adding the soap, and changing how and when you spray. It's not as effective as Round-Up, but with how safe it is, and with the kids doing the work, I'm not worried about it being half as effective...
