I'm debating whether to take a leave or not- With Dr. T and will be doing a few rounds of IVF for egg banking- then IVF with an infusion-

between the stress of teaching and this being our last shot/hope- I really would like to take a leave during this time and take care of myself etc.

Has anyone every taken time off? through FMLA? anyone that can share their experience etc it would be very helpful.

TIA!!! :)

I would do it if you could afford it. I don't think you get paid though (depending on days) for FMLA and benefits stop the day you reach 12 weeks for the DOE, that being said I think you can take 12 weeks a year so when you wind up pregnant it will be fine for 2016.

You do get paid, I confirmed with my district- I'm on Long Island though. Just need a medical note from my dr. But whatever I take, if I do get pregnant right away- it comes of my FMLA for maternity. We have that reinstated every year. I received some info but I wanted to see who actually did it.

I haven't but I'm thinking about it for next cycle if I can't do it over the summer. But it's not 12 weeks every year. It's 12 weeks in a 12 month period. So if you use it all in the late part of this year you would have to wait until late in 2016. It doesn't just start over in January of 2016

I didn't because I wanted to save the days for when I did get pregnant & although there were hard days waking up super early for monitoring, running late & emotionally where I shouldn't have been at work, most days I needed the distraction & not being solely focused on all of this. I totally see your viewpoint though also

You only get paid if you have the sick days to cover it, since it will come off of your sick time. If you have the days to spare, and you're comfortable with it shortening your maternity leave, I say go for it. It's extraordinarily stressful trying to go through IVF and teach at the same time, especially trying to juggle the appointments if they conflict with your teaching schedule.

2/3 of the IVF cycles I did were during the summer. If you can get your cycle to sync properly, you can potentially get in at least two cycles. The first time I did a cycle was during the school year and it felt so hectic. If we try to have another DC, we will be cycling during summer 2016 to cut down on the stress.

I'm debating. I have been doing this for 2 1/2 years and managing the stress, early appts, days off for monitoring etc. with two different drs. on long island.
Now that I am with Dr. T in the city, it will be that much more difficult. especially for monitoring. I am also doing egg banking which means I am doing a few ivf cycles to gather eggs, CGH them and then frozen transfer any left over normal embryos. along with that I have to do the IVG infusion etc. Our cycle was delayed due to blood issues with my husband that have recently been cleared up. So I will probably be banking over the summer into fall and doing the transfer during fall/winter- if all goes according to my plan. ha I want to take off for the transfusion transfer part- being this is probably our last hope and school has become more and more stressful every year, I don't want to take any chances with this. Yes I will have to dip into my sick bank but I have to start putting ME first. I found out I can do intermittent leave which means take chunks of days for FMLA not straight through weeks which is good to know.
Thanks to everyone for their input and advice.

It really has been and I have been doing it but I am TIRED. the juggling, running around and the stress is becoming too much and now add going into the BUSY part of the city for this has put me over the edge. Thanks!

IVF monitoring is all day? How does that work with adjusting meds? I'm asking because I have a consult with him in a month and I am just trying to figure out if its possible to swing it with work or not getting into the city.

yes. I did 2 IVF cycles with him. They were mostly pretty accommodating with giving me a 4:30 or 4:45 appt. They run the bloodwork right there. They would call me with instructions (if it wasn't clear just by sono) by the time I got off the subway. Then you can give yourself the new dose that night when you take your meds.

I have been to two other drs and I love Dr. T and what he has done for me so far.
I will make this city thing work. I just wish he had early morning hours-

I took the train in and walked to his office- it is very close to Penn. The city is so congested around there- drove in twice and wanted to take everyone down! ha and I didn't even start a cycle yet- this was for other things.

I really think I am - at least for the transfer part. The banking I can do most in the summer- if all goes to plan- you know it never does in the IVF world.

Hi. I've been looking for updates from you. Teaching is SOOO stressful these days. I'm exhausted leaving there every day and can never catch up. If you can take the time do it! When I did my IVF cycle with Dr. T it was stressful trying to get there for appointments. I got out of work after 3 and either got a ride from someone heading into the city or took the train. It was a race to get there for the last appointment which was usually 4:45. I was always sweating running from the train to his office or worrying about traffic. When I wrote to him saying thank you for everything, a few months ago, I told him I was appreciative of him accommodating my schedule. He said he would wait if he knew I was coming. I always made it on time but the stress was something else. So yes if you can take FMLA do it! I would have cycled in the summer if it worked out but I didn't wanna waste anymore time.

So after I had baby boy I took the 6 weeks which DOE let's you take. I had to use my sick days for that and even though I had plenty more sick days I could not use them. The rest of the days of my 12 week leave was covered under FMLA but I didn't get paid which sucked but no way I could have went back and functioned before he was 12 weeks old. SO FMLA starts the day of your first absence from work. Since I had him over Dec break it started January 5th. If your job is saying you will still get paid on FMLA and you have the days go for it! I think you at minimum need the day of procedure up until your preg test and HOPEFULLY its a BFP and then take off a little extra time to relax.

GL always rooting for you!

Thank you. Since we've been with dr t, has to get Hysteroscopy, blood work, saline sono so you know that takes up time. We were already to start and bam my husband had a common virus in his blood- so we had to postpone. Finally ready to go! Going in tomorrow and of course he has meetings after 3 so last appt is 245 so I'm taking half day in pm.
Yep my FMLA is my sick days. As long as I have dr note and paperwork is approved I have up to 12 weeks pd FMLA. I took FMLA for my surgeries back in 2008 and2012. I was out 5 weeks in 2008 and was paid. Same with 2012. I can also take intermittent leave which is take days in chunks rather than weeks. I'll see how summer goes. Right now I'll try to get late appts or take half days. Principal is so supportive and told me do what I have to do shell work it out.
I'm doing ok just busy- not looking forward to the Meds- going to be honest! But I'm not giving up. Hope all is well with you!!!XO
