Teachers taking an FMLA followed by a child care leave (X-POST)
Will you have your insurance until your sick days are gone OR for 12 weeks? In my case, 12 weeks will be longer.
DH is self employed, so this is an expense I was not prepared for. I was under impression we would have the benefits for 12 weeks.

You have insurance for 12 week. After that you do have the option to pay for Cobra if that is cheaper then DH's I believe it was around 1200-1300 per month for a family of three in NYC DOE HTH!

In my district it's as long as you are using sick days (but you can only use 6 or 8 weeks worth depending on type of birth) thn you pay the district out of pocket rate for the remaining time.

When you go on maternity leave, you need to exhaust all your sick days, and you get paid for those. After you have exhausted all your sick days, then you get no pay for the remainder of your leave. Regular maternity leave is 6 weeks, with benefits. FMLA is 12 weeks WITH benefits as well.
If you work for the NYC DOE, you have the option to extend welfare fund for another 4-6 months (I"m not sure about the other benefits, I have to call to find out again) but only if you apply and qualify. You could continue your benefits uninterrupted by purchasing Cobra which as stated above is around 1200-1400 per month.
I need to find out more info because I'm in the same situation!! DH is self employed and I have to weigh out if it is more costly to continue COBRA during my child care leave or purchase a business health plan through his company...(Which I have no clue about).

When I had my DD 5 years ago I was able to keep my benefits for 4 months, one month more than FMLA. Check into it, it's called SLOAC.
