telling your boss
How did you do it? I'm at a small company so I'm not sure I'll have time off. I'm paid fee for service so I could possibly come in here and there when I have the baby and my husbands home incase I need to in order to keep my job. I'm hoping I'll get some time to enjoy the baby.

Re: telling your boss
I just went in and said I was expecting. I didn't tell until about 20 weeks or so.
Regarding time off you are allowed 6 weeks disability if vaginal and 8 if a C-section. You get the lovely stipend from the insurance company. Good luck and enjoy time with your baby

Re: telling your boss
Yeah, I was going to say, with DD I was a preschool teacher and we did not have any kind of maternity leave available there. HOWEVER, I was certainly permitted 6wks for vaginal or 8wks for c-section, though it would have been unpaid. At the very least, I would not have lost my job by taking that time to physically heal after birth! Your job should be similar in that regard. I just told her after first trimester, but in the end decided that being a SAHM was better for me and my situation. This time around, I do a home daycare so I told each of the parents by 16wks and handed them each a written up letter of my intentions (to only close down one week and offer my back-up caregiver for the other 2-3 weeks). I had to do it a little different this time around because the situation is very different with not having a boss, but also not wanting to lose income either.

Re: telling your boss
I also work at a small office and i have a very good relationship with my boss, so i better tell him soon. I could be totally wrong here, but when a company has less than 50 employees they are only required to hold your job for the 6 or 8 weeks, but not forced to pay you/us for that time off.

I told them immediately but I also work for my dad. I get the minimum 6 weeks for vaginal, 8 weeks for CS and only get paid what NY SDI pays ($170 a week) unless I use what's remaining of my sick and vacation time. I've been working extra hours so I'm up to 3 weeks paid at my regular salary but then when I come back, I'm out of days, which sucks.

That's how it was in my case at the preschool. There were only 7 of us employed at the center (it was small) so I was offered no paid maternity leave, but my job was definitely going to be held for me during that 6-8wk time frame that I wouldn't have been able to come in.
