people giving you old crap

Does any one else feel like being pregnant gives people the licence to unload their old baby crap to you? The other day someone gave me bottles that were never used but are like 14 years old. I thanked the person but seriously they definitely aren't BPA free so I'm not using them. Should I donate them or throw them away. Does anyone else have people dumping things on you. I don't mind things that are just a few years old but seriously there are new laws on everything lately.

There are so many moms out there that need other people's "old crap." But to them it will mean the world. Donate it.

Exactly--say thank you and then donate it. And consider yourself blessed that you are able to pass along to someone less fortunate!

Ugh! A friend of mine just gave me 12 big garbage bags of girls clothes. Very sweet and generous of her, but they are sizes like 4T and bigger! I am not due until April. Most of it is stained and the styles I am sure will not be in by the time our daughter is old enough to wear them. I made my DH load them in his car and he is going to donate them for me.

YUP! Had bags of clothing before I was even pregnant.
I donated all of my gently used clothes that the girls grew out of and the stuff that has never been used or worn I put aside for my SIL.

I think they mean well and are trying to help you. If they just wanted to get rid of their old crap they'd donate it or just throw it out. I'd appreciate and be grateful you have so much "crap". If you don't want it say thank you and donate it to the many people who actually need it.

If you do not want the stuff that they are giving you tell the person you are not interested or just donate it. I happily took my friends and family members "old crap." I would much rather spend the money on other things instead of clothes and stuff that they will outgrow quickly anyway.

I agree about the clothes. I mean who cares if the baby or toddler is "out of style". They will be spitting up all over it, getting it filthy, poop diaper blow outs, food stains, rips, and then outgrowing it 2 minutes later.

I loved getting hand me downs!
Who wants to spend money on clothes they were in for such a short time.

It doesn't sound like she wasn't being grateful, I just think she was overloaded with things that she doesn't need and wondering if she should donate. I think donating is the right move.

I have the opposite problem, my family members who have young children and had really nice items (like the Halo Bassinet) lent them out or sold them in garage sales so I'm not getting any hand me downs. Nobody in our family held on to anything even though their kids are all young!

Trust me I am not ungrateful when people give me useful baby things, my sister and sister in law are holding things for me that are useful, but 14 year old bottles are full of contaminates that I am not giving my baby, and I actually feel bad donating them bc no children should be exposed to that.

Re: people giving you old crap

Be careful with donating, make sure they won't want it back. I had a bad situation with DHs cousin who gave us so much stuff from his DS who was already 7, and things like the car seat etc were passed expiration. We donated the majority of the stuff, and kept some things at my moms, but randomly 5 years later he asked for the stuff back. We ended up spending a small fortune buying all new stuff for DHs cousin.

Then say no thanks, or thank you and throw it out. I'm sure these people are well-meaning...and anything we use now will probably be horrifying to people in 14 years too :)

Wow that's crazy! Did they really expect you to store their stuff all that time, even after you wouldn't have needed it any more for your own child?

I've been offered used baby items and clothes. Those that I don't want I politely refuse, while still thanking them for their offer. I kept the clothes I was given , even if they had some stains or I didn't love the style. I might never use them, but you never know when you might need them. But when my baby outgrows them I plan to donate them or pass them on to someone else. Unless the person giving the items specifically says it's a loan and they want the items back, I wouldn't store them for them.

Right? It's a wonder we are still alive with the bottles used in the 70s and 80s and the cribs

I donate a TON. I also work for a non profit so I am always just giving stuff to random clients. As my first baby got older, they kept getting more from me.

I got a lot of hand-me downs and was so grateful for them. Money isn't terribly tight for us but at the same time babies plow through things so quickly that spending feels so wasteful if someone has something to give. That said, if something is unsafe or at least you are not comfortable with it, that is a different story. Accept graciously and donate or dispose.
