Maternity "Deposit" at hospital? Update in OP

I'm due in April and just received a bill from the hospital I'm delivering at (Mount Sinai). Is it normal to be billed estimated charges? The statement is called a "Maternity Deposit Statement." I haven't even toured the hospital yet and already I'm being asked to pay a few thousand bucks. Do other hospitals do this too?

Update: My two friends that recently delivered at Mount Sinai both said they received the same invoice a few months before and ignored it (though one wasn't intentionally--she forgot). The other person actually works at Mount Sinai and was told not to pay it ahead of time. Both had no issues being admitted and paid afterwards. Anyways, apparently it's standard in most NYC hospitals to pre-bill. I'm going to call my insurance first because the hospital billed me assuming I didn't spend any money towards my deductible (my yearly deductible is $2,200 and that's what they are billing me) and I have already reached about half of it half way through my year. So even if I owe something, it's not as much as they are billing me. I'm dealing with it now!

As for prenatal visits, this is definitely totally separate. I don't pay anything when I go to my doctor but this bill came after I pre-registered with the hospital for delivery.

Thanks for your responses!

Your insurance covered your entire hospital stay and delivery? I'm pretty sure my insurance doesn't cover the entire thing but just expected to be billed after, not before.

It's also assuming I haven't met my deductible for the year (I am on a July 2015 - June 2016 calendar year for insurance) and I'm almost half way to meeting my deductible. It just seems so strange but the letter attached to the bill says I owe it all 30 months prior to delivery date.

I have some pretty kick ass insurance through the NYPD. I think I had like $100 co pay for everything
We have no deductible for anything

I had to prepay my copay. However I had to pay it the day before I was admitted.

Is the amount your copay amount?

When I delivered at NYU I had to pay an estimated bill ahead of time. I did not have to at LIJ. Every hospital is different, but if you got a bill, you likely have to pay it. You can call to make sure, though.

NYU Langone? Interesting... I'm due around the same time as RacheK and I haven't gotten anything.

I'd definitely be calling my insurance to find out what to do.

Never heard of this.

Any billing was done after.

What if you decide to use a different hospital? Or end up giving birth at home?

My dr did something similar. We decided what hospital I'd deliver at, and then based on my insurance coverage, they figured what my out of pocket cost would be that insurance didn't cover. It wasn't much, maybe $600. So they made me pay toward it each visit. Then there was nothing to pay after delivery.

I only had to pay my deductible $300 and that was at admission I believe not months before. Sounds ballsy.

My friend told her Winthrop did this to her -- I think it depends on your insurance.

Never heard of that. I wouldn't prepay a thing, anything can happen. I can't believe they would think to do such a thing !

I did not have to do this but every hospital and insurance is different. Are you paying for a separate room. If that is the case then maybe that is the amount of the extra for the separate room. It would make some sense to ask for that to be prepaid to avoid a situation where they don't get paid that amount since insurance won't cover that.

That's insane! What happens if someone pays. That and ends up delivering elsewhere. How long does a deposit take to get returned?
If they really "force" you to pay then,go on. A payment plan and pay a small amount. That's what I'm going to do when I get my bill, after I deliver dd.

This. That's absurd. I paid my copay the day after I delivered. This was at NSUH.

Re: Maternity "Deposit" at hospital?

It depends on the hospital and your insurance. I know of some doctors that will send you their portion of the bill prior to delivery (your co-pay part of it). Some hospitals will bill you the hospital co pay or your portion of the deductible (if not met) prior to delivery. If it comes out to less than what you've already paid they will mail you a check for the difference.

I just delivered in late July and received the bill post delivery for my OOP. That was at North Shore and same thing in 2013 at LIJ.

Yeah definitely depends on insurance because Winthrop gave me a small bill months after I delivered DS there w

I never paid anything after my initial co-pay for my first prenatal appointment. I don't see why you would have to pay a hospital co-pay if you've already paid that-- doesn't it all technically fall under the same medical need??
There's also always a chance that you dont end up giving birth there. I wouldn't pay it because honestly they won't turn you away if you show up in labor. Don't think the hospital is even allowed to do that.

A private room isn't included in this, that would be totally separate (it says so on the invoice).

My hospital co-pay and dr. co-pay ARE different, but my hospital co-pay is $100, they are billing me $2,200 which is my deductible amount. It's strange regardless.

Update at top!

I'm in Ct and my 3rd delivery will be in May (all different staes and hospitals lol) but anyway they went throguh my insuarance and sat down with me and told me everything I was covered for and what I needed to pay. I think my deductible is $500 for the hospital stay ( I have really good insurance for this day and age). But they are making me pay installments leading up to May.

I guess soon enough every where will be like this. They want the money before so they don't have to fight people who won't pay after.

Well, I delivered there 3 years ago, but I think I got the bill about 2 months before my EDD.
