Maternity Hospital Gown ?

ok so I've noticed from other girls I know who've delivered at Winthrop (where I am delivering) that the hospital gown they give you is HEINOUS! it's like a greenish plaid... it's absolutely hideous!

I actually came across a website where you can buy maternity hospital gowns with nice patterns on them.....

would the hosp let me wear one of them, do you think? anyone have any experience with this?

I know I'm being a weirdo but the gowns r soooo ugly & I'll obv be having a lot of pics taken

PS- YES, I will be the girl who insists on wearing makeup while delivering! Don't judge me! LOL Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Maternity Hospital Gown ?

I believe they would let you wear it, however, I can not fathom spending money on something that is likely going to get every bodily fluid imaginable on it. I can pretty much assure you that you will not care what you are wearing when you are in labor, or pushing, or being operated on, or holding your freshly born baby. As soon as you give birth and are able to get up out of bed, you can change into whatever you want. So I would just bring whatever clothes you want to wear and change right away if you want. But I definitely wouldn't spend money on something to wear during delivery.

Re: Maternity Hospital Gown ?

They might let you wear it but why spend the money cause it will be garbage when you are finished with labor. I would just wear what they give you and change after. None of us are going to be pretty when we are pushing!!!!

Seriously, the ugly hospital gown will be the last thing on your mind. I was able to shower the night I gave birth..you can change after.

This!

Who cares what you are wearing? They aren't flattering to begin with. And noone is going to be looking at your hospital gown pattern, they'll be looking at you and your baby.

Re: Maternity Hospital Gown ?

While I can totally get on board with the concept, I think it's a waste as well. I was curious so I googled and saw some-- and they were all $50ish+. Maybe the patterns were cute, but they were still hospital gowns-- you are only wearing this gown during the delivery-- then you can put on your own clothes. If you HAD to wear a hospital gown the whole time you were therr, and people were visitng you, etc., maybe-- but delivery ain't pretty and gowns are meant to be thrown in that biohazard container!!

Re: Maternity Hospital Gown ?

I'm a l&d nurse at winthrop and I know the gowns are not drop dead gorgeous. If you want to wear your own gown it must be accessible in the back and on the arm for an epidural and IV. I hope you understand delivery is messy(blood, fluids etc) and I haven't seen a patient come out with a clean gown and their are times they may have to change it before you even deliver due to being covered in amniotic fluid once they break your water....just something to consider!

Re: Maternity Hospital Gown ?

This reminds me of one of Tori Spelling's shows. She showed up at the hospital to deliver her daughter with her own gown. I was Chat Icon Chat Icon because I can totally picture myself doing that! But not after hearing about all the gunk that's gonna get on it!

This.

The idea is great in theory but like another PP mentioned - if you had to wear that gown during your hospital stay. With all the stuff that will get on that gown I will not be spending the extra money.

Re: Maternity Hospital Gown ?

Even the ones that come in cuter patterns...they are still MooMoos if you ask me.

Personally, you wear it for delivery, and who the heck cares what you look like anyway. Like someone said, there are bodily fluids EVERYwhere and some not so pretty things happen on the table. Funky green plaid is the least of my worries.

Once you are in your own room you can wear your own pajamas until you go home. SO if you walk around back and forth between the nursery and your room, or on the floor, you are in your own PJs.

I'd be more concerned with getting a nice pair of PJs (or two), maybe a robe, to wear in the hospital then the hospital gown.

Trust me when I tell you- when you are delivering your baby, you could care less if you are in a potato sack, if you are naked, if your legs are hairy, if your HS English teacher walks in the room- everything goes out the window.
All the superficial cares I had- and I had many!- GONE!

The color and pattern on the gown are the least thing you will think of.

And that gown will get ruined.

I wouldn't waste a penny on something that will have to be tossed later on anyway.

And I was that girl who inisisted on wearing make up during delivery. Went to the hospital all pretty.
By the time she came out of me, all the make up had run off my face- so regardless it wont' matter.
You are not going to look like a model after delivery, no matter what you do.

ITA! You can not imagine the gross fluids etc. that will come from your body during labor. Once you deliver you will get a new gown. I put on my own clothes the next day, they did not require me to wear a gown. I also delivered at Winthrop.

Well said!!! Believe me, I had every intention of being the woman who would have her hair and make-up done from the second I arrived at the hospital until the minute I leaved. And I did, I put my make-up on right after my water broke, and boy, did I regret it after 15+ hours of labor, hours of pushing and an eventual c-section. The gown will be the last thing on your mind. But, if it'll make you happy, by all means go for it. But, if I were you, I'd save your money and buy something to wear in the hospital after the baby is born. That is when you will have all of your visitors anyway and you'll feel more comfortable in your own clothes as opposed to a hospital gown.

Re: Maternity Hospital Gown ?

I know I'm completely in the minority here but I wore my own gown for the births of my sons -- and it was the same gown for both of them. It was a summer dress/cover up thing from Target and I can comfortably say it wasn't even gross after my deliveries.

A little bit of vernix on the top when the DC was handed to me on my chest but as soon as I was cleaned up, the dress went in a plastic bag and home with Dh to get washed in hot water.

I don't know why, but I'm not grossed out by this -- Chat Icon

ITA! I was also the girl who took a shower and did my hair/makeup before leaving for the hospital. By the time I delivered my son 24 hours later, I looked like crap. I personally would not waste my money on a gown but if you are still thinking of getting one, I would make sure it's open in the back.

Ditto to this! Trust me when you are in labor you are not going to care what you are wearing! I had my makeup all ready to touch up afterwards for pics - that was THE last thing on my mind. I doubt you will care what your gown looks like.

this is funny b/c my SIL who is currently working on #3 sent me a link to a website selling those "cute" hospital gowns, saying it was a cute idea.

i considered it for a minute, but honestly i just didn't think the gowns they were selling really were very cute anyway! maybe it was just that site, but for the money it wasn't worth it to me, mostly just for that reason alone. i'll just take the one the hospital gives me instead of a slightly less unattractive one that i paid for.
