Anyone else having/had a small baby?

Just curious as to what some of your experiences were if you were told your baby was measuring small. At my sono I was just told my baby was measuring in the 10th percentile. I am 32 weeks pregnant. My Dr. told me not to panic and that it may very well mean I'm just having a small baby. My son was average (7lbs 13oz). This time I am having a girl. However, he does want to monitor her growth because he said there is a possibility the baby is not getting nutrients from my placenta. Of course I've been reading things online and some people end up having babies which are perfectly fine (I know the sono is not always accurate when determining size) and others spoke about having to have the baby taken at 37 weeks because it was small and there was concern. Has anyone else experienced this? I just want to hear stories.

Hailey was measuring small also. She was 6lbs 2oz. The only difference between her and Jillian was that I got a growth sono at every appointment.

The only reason they would deliver early is if the growth stopped.

Growth sonos can be SO inaccurate. I was told at 36 weeks that dd was measuring 6lbs 10oz. Well, she was born 2 weeks later at 6.6. So unless she lost weight, they were WAY off.

How small are they saying?

I was measuring small back in 2003 (at my 20 week ultrasound). I was monitored weekly by my OB and a MFM. Well at 28 weeks I had a fetal demise due to a clot on the maternal side of the placenta which cut off nutrients as well as the cord being in a true knot. Every pregnancy after was high risk and I was on blood thinners.

Basically if it's slightly off then no worries but if it's by a lot definitely have them check your blood levels.

I believe less than 10th percentile is consisted iugr. Extra monitoring is good and as long as her growth continues well enough you should be fine. The fact that you're seeing it so late in the pregnancy is good rather than it starting much earlier. With dd2, my fundal height was measuring small at 34 weeks so they said not to worry but they wanted to do a growth sono the following week. The night before that was scheduled I ended up delivering bc of other complications. At 35w 4d she was exactly 4 pounds. So based on the numbers she was iugr but I was never diagnosed since it doesn't really matter once it deliver. She did great and had no issues related to her small size. She's now 15 months and 13th percentile for weight and 3rd for height so I think she's just destined to be a peanut.

I agree with the growth sonos being off. I was told my DD would be well over 8lbs, she was born 10 days late at 7lb6oz. If they are telling you 10th percentile and they want to induce you at some point early because they believe she is not getting what she needs, I would just go with it. I am in a Facebook pregnancy group where this happens a lot and the babies do very well when born early.

Re: Anyone else having/had a small baby?

My whole third tri baby was measuring small.
My belly was measuring small too.
Because I had slightly elevated BP they were concerned that maybe she wasn't getting enough blood flow
So I had a few doppler sonos and they determined blood flow was fine- she was just small
Like 15-20th percentile ish
I had to go for growth sonos every other week at the end and a NST every week
Annoying but worth the piece of mind.

After all that hoopla, baby girl was born one day before my due date- at 7 pounds even- quite average- and perfectly healthy.
Oh and to this day, she's tiny...not in a sickly unhealthy way, just small boned and petite.

My son was measuring small also. The sono tech was saying he's measuring small but when the DR would feel my stomach they swore he was a lot bigger. They kept monitoring me every week and I was going for constant sonos to make sure he wasn't losing weight. I ended up giving birth 3 weeks early and he was 5lbs 1oz. In my case the DR told me he didn't have "brown fat" that he should have had which made him small. He's now 13 weeks and gaining weight/growing how he should be.

As long as they are monitoring you everything will be fine- it's just nerve racking when they tell you things like that.

TBH I wouldn't pay too much attention to the growth sonos. For both of my pregnancies they have been off by a pound.

DD3 was small and is a perfectly healthy (small) baby. She was born at 40w 5d and weighed 6lbs 1oz. She has consistently been around the 10th percentile. She is 6 months now and still a peanut! In my case the Sonos actually measured her bigger (not much - they always knew she was small). I wouldn't worry so long as they are monitoring you. I was induced bc of her size and movement at the end.

Re: Anyone else having/had a small baby?

At around 33 weeks i was diagnosed with IUGR growth restriction and had biophysical sonos twice weekly. MY fluids were also very low. They can go hand in hand. The lack of growth didn't bother them as much as the low fluids b/c that can cause distress. So long as the baby wasn't in distress they were going to let me continue to carry her. At 37.3 weeks the sono showed i had virtually no fluids and she was delivered that night at 5.6 lbs, bigger than we expected.

Did you go into labor naturally or did they induce you early because of the Low fluid issue?
