Is this standard now?

Last year it was not offered to me. I think you had to be high risk or over a certain age. But I have a few friends who are pregnant and have all gotten it (not high risk and under 35). Wondering if something changed since last year?

Also, related to this - does anyone see Trongone? Does he offer this now to everyone?

My doctor does this for all patients regardless of age/risk, but many of my friends did not have this. I've heard that insurance does not always cover it, but my dr office told me that if I got a billed, I should just bring it in to the office and they would call and take care of it.

I was not covered for it since I was 29 (now 30). I had to wait until 20 damn weeks! Chat Icon It was torture.

Gotcha. I was not offered it last year. But I know three people who had it down. All low risk pregnancies and under 30. I thought maybe something changed.

Last pg I had to wait until 20 weeks too. I originally wanted to be team green so I didn't care but now it is going to be torture!!!

My doctor offers this test to patients turning 35 during their pregnancy or are 35+ (or of course if they are high risk for other reasons). It is not a 12 week gender test -- it is a blood test to make sure there are no issues with the baby... a plus is that you can find out the gender earlier if you want to. I am in the age range where my doctor recommends this test. I am considering not getting it as I have friends who have had the test and had things come up abnormal -- and then things were totally fine. I feel like the test ruined the early parts of their pregnancy and they were full of worry. Not sure what I will do on this personally, and just wanted to put it out there that taking the test isnt all it may seem to be cracked up to be!

So I was offered this test because I will be 35 when I deliver. I was told by my OBGYN AND my insurance company that it would be covered.

Fast forward a few months...my insurance company denied the claim stating that the Dr's office and the company did not send the required documentation in time. So now I have been fighting with the company, Natera, (for the Panorama test) to get the bill down from 8,000 to $200 for hardship.

So bottom line be-careful before taking these tests!

My cousin went to a doctor that did this even though she was under 35, I think it was his standard practice to do this test to all patients.

ETA def call your insurance before you do this test though- like a PP commented, I've heard of some people getting a bill worth thousands of dollars as a result.

Yup, I know it is not gender only and that is why it is offered to high risk patients. I heard the same thing about insurance issues last year that is why I was wondering if something may have changed this year i.e., now part of standard maternity care. But doesn't sound like it is. Thanks everyone! Sounds like we'll have to wait till 20 weeks again if we decide to find out.

Ugh, seriously? That's miserable especially because you fall into the 35+ like me that can get this test covered. That's infuriating and I do hope your Dr. is helping. I was happy I didn't see any bill for the test at all.

I see Trongone. I'm 23 weeks and was never offered this. I have a LOT of friends pregnant now. Some got it. Some didn't. All different Drs. And there's no rhyme or reason. The moms 35+ all had it but some under that had it too.

As for Trongone, he didn't even mention it to me.

I saw Dr. Petrocelli (Dr. Trongone's partner) at my first appointment with #3 and he mentioned that the lab they use is a very low fee for the testing you're referring too. I would definitely ask them about it if you're interested. The one drawback is they've had a few false positives which led to more invasive procedures that could have been avoided. That was the reason we decided against it.

I am also considering avoiding this test. I am 34 but will turn 35 during the pregnancy. My doctor is pushing for it bc it is not invasive... but with the few ppl I know having false positives it scares me. If you dont mind me asking are you 35+?

Re: 12W Gender Blood Test Question and also Dr. Trongone

I'm 33 and have had two very healthy/boring pregnancies already haha. If it were up to me I probably would have gone for it but my dh gets horrible anxiety. I couldn't risk a false positive and having him getting sick just to find out the gender a few weeks earlier.

I'm in my 20s and I got the test done- they told me it would be covered, as they cover it for all now. They said if I got a bill, to let them know and I would only pay a max of like $80 or $100 (can't remember) for the copay if anything. Never got a bill
