Cost of redoing Kitchen and bathrooms?

We're looking at houses and with so many I feel like I'd at least want to redo the kitchen and all bathrooms. I really don't know how much that would cost. If you redid your kitchen and/or bathroom, can you please share the cost - and if you could, separate by how much for kitchen, how much for each bathroom? Just looking for an idea of current costs, I know it can vary a lot.

it varies hugely on the size of the kitchen, custom cabinets vs. non-custom, what type of flooring, what type of countertops etc etc etc... On the low end, I would say like 20k for the kitchen, and could go upwards of 100k. Bathroom i would say anywhere from like 7-20k. I guess if you did all at once, you might get a better price from a contractor

I agree with this. Kitchen size matters, as does the grade of materials/appliances, as well as whether it is a total gut v. only a partial reno. I think if you are going for a total kitchen gut with all new everything, 20K is low for Long Island. For bathrooms, everyone I know that said "oh I got a contractor who is doing everything I want for 7K" ended up paying at least 12-15K.

Talking about standard renovations (not adding on square footage or going super high-end with materials, I'd say $10-$15K for bathroom, $30K to $50K for kitchen.

Again, getting an Ikea kitchen renovation is going to be different from a completely custom renovation. And as others have said, size of the space matters.

If the homes you are looking at have dated kitchens and bathrooms, and you are not sure you can afford to renovate everything at once, consider doing cheaper, "facelift" type procedures (refacing cabinets and changing hardware, getting a new bathroom vanity or bathroom lighting). I think it's always better to do a comprehensive renovation, and not do it piece-meal, but sometimes a few simple changes (even things like fresh paint) can make the space something you can live with until you can afford to renovate. In this market, with low inventory, it helps to be a bit open minded and concentrate more on layout, location, lot size... things that you can't change down the road.

Re: Cost of redoing Kitchen and bathrooms?

Our bathroom is small. I think it's about 5x7 & we paid almost $18k for a total gut, added a baseboard for heat, moved plumbing, added high hats. I hope our second bathroom will be cheaper when we do it using less expensive materials.

We are in the process of doing what Christine suggested in our kitchen. We can't afford a full remodel yet so we are giving it a facelift. We painted the cabinets using rustoleum cabinet transformation kit. We bought those click in floor tiles to go over top of the current stained & old linoleum floor. Will eventually paint. (kitchen is not my husband's priority so it's not "finished" yet)

Re: Cost of redoing Kitchen and bathrooms?

We just redid our upstairs bathroom. It's not big - I don't know exactly prob 5x7. 48" shower -no tub.

Total gut, moved some pipes, bought all material ourselves between HD and Lowes. Total cost was just under 10k

we assumed about 7-8 but went a little nicer with some fixtures , including frameless swing door shower doors.

Kitchen, I have no clue. But according to my DH, our kitchen (we have a basic cape) will be about 40-50k depending on type of granite and appliances.

Kitchens and bathrooms can be very expensive.
If the house has a kitchen where you can just reface cabinets and et new counter tops, you can do that for a lot less. But if it's a gut job, get ready to pay a pretty penny

Agreed. Prices will vary depending on the materials you choose, work that needs to be done etc. my dad is a custom builder and he's done kitchens from like $45k all the way to $100k plus. It really just depends.
Our kitchen is from 1950 stove and all. We are buying 1 appliance at a time, my dad is building all the cabinets for us, we still have to save for some aplliances, it will be a huge expense as we have to redo the electric and move plumbing as well. My dad estimated around $70k for ours including all he's doing for us at no cost to us. My kitchen is fairly small but it needs a lot of work.
We did a simple face lift in the bathroom and replaced the floor for around $2k (small bathroom) a house will never be perfect but you can do little things to give it a fresh feel :) when we bought our house only 2 rooms were done within the last 10 years, the rest of this place is a time warp!!!!

We've redone 2 bathrooms - DH did all of the work. The cost for one was about $12K (materials only) and the other was about $10K (materials only). But as all the others have stated, the cost can vary greatly, depending on what materials you use. The cosst of tiles, vanities, lighting and plumbing fixtures etc ranges tremendously

Re: Cost of redoing Kitchen and bathrooms?

I had to replace the sub floor, tiles, toilet, and molding in the kids bathroom. It is 6x11 and that cost $2400. I used tiles from Home Depot.

We redid our bathroom - total gut job. Standard size bathroom - 5x7. Didn't move plumbing, but added electrical for high hats and a fan. All in was around $10k (not including paint) Took about 10 days to complete.
