Hair extensions

I did a search on this topic and did find a lot, but nothing super recent...
So I'm wondering if anyone has hair extensions, what type, what do you think about them, how much did they cost, and where did you have them done?

I finished chemo about 9 months ago. I think I have about 3 inches of hair (it's growing pretty well), but I am still wearing my wig because I really don't like myself with short hair. At all. I can't imagine wearing this wig for who knows how much longer? Chat Icon

So I finally thought - maybe extensions!? I'm not sure if they can be done on such short hair, or if they will damage my hair since it is probably still really fragile.

Any advice would be so appreciated...especially if anyone knows of a place that specialized in hair care after chemo.

TIA!

Re: Hair extensions

First of all, congratulations on finishing chemo! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have human hair, keratin bonded extensions. The kind that are basically glued in. I got them mostly for volume - my natural hair grows long, but it's horrendously fine and straight. I want to say it cost about $1700-1800 to have them done originally. You need fill-ins occasionally after that and the price varies. I THINK you can do them on hair as short as yours, but I'm not positive.

I live out of state so I can't recommend a place in NY. But if you have any other questions I can try to help.

I am very glad I got mine. They are so easy to maintain if you do just a few things - like don't go to bed with wet hair, always sleep with a ponytail, brush your hair thoroughly at least once a day. Your natural hair suffers damage if they get tangled/matted but I have found it quite easy to prevent by doing these simple things. Oh and I practically never have to wash my hair - I guess because I have so much of it that the dirt spreads out Chat Icon I only wash my hair twice a week and it looks good / holds its style in between.

I've also heard good things about the tape-in extensions but have no personal experience.

Let me know if you have any other questions I can try to answer!

I'm trying tape in ones fairly soon so I will let you know. I bought them online. I think if you go to get them done it is somewhere between 3-500 bucks

Are you going to put them in yourself? Is this something easy to do if so? I've thought about getting them for years but they just seem so $$$, plus I had a friend have her hair get ruined by a different type which wasn't right for her hair, but that's a whole other story.

Re: Hair extensions

Congrats on finishing Chemo!!! :)

My friend went through this same thing. She researched the crap out of this and ended up going to a stylist who specializes in extensions after chemo, and can do it on short hair he is one of two (i think) people in the country that specializes in this. Catch is - he is in Minnesota (I believe) but she LOVED him and did it twice... once initially then let it grow out a lot (she should have gone back sooner obvi), then the second time was right before her wedding...
I can get you his information if you are interested.

Re: Hair extensions

Definitely be careful and go with someone who specializes in extensions after chemo as mentioned above.
Extensions can be VERY damaging on your hair- espeically if it's still fragile.

Mine pretty much left me with bald spots- it's called traction alopecia- and it's a real bytch.

Good luck though- and congrats on finishing your treatments!

No, I work in a hair salon so one of the stylist is going to put them in for me. You would definitely need someone to help you.

To the op congrats on finishing treatment. I'd try and hold out for your hair to grow a little more if you can. Hair is going to be very fragile for some time...

Mine were clip ins so my hair loss happened at the spots I clipped them in. However the derm said she sees it a LOT more now that hair extensions are more popular than ever ..and with all types of extensions. She said its due to the weight of the extension pulling on your own hair. Eventually the root weakens and the hair starts to be pulled out. Especially if you have fine, fragile or weak hair. (Which I do).She said it can grow back eventually if you stop wearing them...but sometimes the damage is permanent if the root gets scarred and destroyed.
There was actually something on the news about this recently, they did a report on it.
Google traction alopecia and you can read about it. Its a bit disturbing.
I am hoping my hair grows back in those spots. Luckily its not visible except if I wear my hair up in a certain way.
