Oil Slick hair-- color, not Oily hair UPDATE
Has anyone seen this trend?
I'm thinking of getting this done because I'm not really working for the next 2 months, so I thought this would be fun to try. I want some colour, but not too much.
UPDATE: I had this done four weeks ago. I chose to go the darker route and did mostly blue and purple, with some hints of red and yellow. My hair was bleached in parts (I have dark brown hair) and then the color was applied (some heat was used). The colorist used a dark purple by the roots to give depth to the color. I'm sorry I don't have pics!
It's four weeks later and there is still a lot of color left. Not a lot of bleach is showing through. There is some purple, but a lot of blue and some green. I really love the way the colors have changed. I was told the colors would only last 3 weeks, but my hair seems to hold onto color. I wash every other day with shampoo and I rinse my hair every day. I used no product for 4 weeks and a blow dryer about 5 times in 4 weeks.
I decided I'm going to get it colored once more since I put in the time for the bleach. I may go a dark purple as the bleach grows out.
Bottom line- I love it. It looks great on dark hair and I got a lot of compliments.
ETA: It took about 5 hours to do. When I go back to get color reapplied, it should only take one hour

Oil Slick hair
I wanted and tried for it, but its not really that easy.
My hair stylist would have had to bleach my hair 2-3x in order to get the colors to show. My hair is dark brown/black and they bleached the highlights and took one test strand and put on the purple and blue. You couldn't tell any difference at all, my hair looked the same color.
She said they would have to bleach the same areas 2 or more times to get it light enough to tell.

Yeah same here. It seems like an awful lot of work. But it does look really cool. I would try it if it weren't for work.

I have brown hair, but it's not black brown. But you make a good point. I bleached parts of my hair (on my own) and did red and I took well.
I think I may give it a try...

Re: Oil Slick hair
It looks pretty but they need to give it a new name. Oil slick hair just does not sound like something I'd want Poor marketing.
LOL

It looks like a very subtle version mermaid hair. I hear oil slick and I think greasy.

Yes! I thought this thread was about solutions for oily hair. LOL And yes, I prefer the term "mermaid hair" Mermaid ombre perhaps?

After the highlighting and the purple and blue not taking she made them red. That definitely shows.
They said the red is better because it's a real dye color for permanent use, and not like the 'fashion' colors that wear off soon. I'm not sure if that is actually true or she just told me that because I was stuck with the red instead of the blue/purple I wanted.

Re: Oil Slick hair-- color, not Oily hair
There are a lot of examples of the Oil Slick on this site.
But again, don't get your hopes up!
I mulled over the decision for 3 months, got myself all excited for it, then only to be let down.
