Update to my son got in trouble post lol

Thanks for your input and perspective yesterday.

My son came home with a positive note about following directions and this morning got a dojo already (it's an app his teacher uses where he gets a dojo is he exceeds expectations).

I am glad I was firm w him, he really got the message LOUD and CLEAR. I lean towards being soft, with a lot of my parenting but I will not accept him being a pain in the teachers ass lol

I think I probably would've had a conversation with him at home about his behavior that day and get his side of the story as to what happened. Maybe he wasn't feeling well or maybe there was an incident on the morning bus that upset him?

Also, since this clearly is out of character for him, I would think the teacher would have provided more details. If she doesn't reach out to you I would definitely reach out to her to find out more information. I know teachers are busy but I find a note like that to be extremely vague and unhelpful.

I think how you handled it was great! If it continues to be an issue, then I would delve deeper into the issue. Like what exactly is he not following instructions on, who is he sitting next to, is someone egging him on, is he distracted, bored, etc. But even the best kids act up once in a while!

I would talk with the teacher & if the behavior continues, do a positive reinforcement thing with prizes. My relatively immature DS had this issue in K.

First grade is much better.

I would have asked him for his side of the story and what went on yesterday that caused him to not follow directions. Then, I would have told him I was disappointed in his behavior and given a 30 minute time out. I feel like for a first offense and at a young age, an hour is too long. Then, I would have had a brain storming session about what to do in the future if he finds himself in a situation like yesterday and what he could do in the future to help him handle his problems constructively. Just punishment without rehab does not help anyone reform. To me the goal is reformed behavior, not punishment.

As a former teacher, I think the only other thing I would do is write a note to the teacher that you have addressed it with him (even though it's obvious with the apology letter) and to please let you know if there are any further issues. I know as a teacher you never know if a parent is going to be defensive and blame you versus holding their child accountable and wanting to be involved in fixing it.
