Can We Start Talking THANKSGIVING?

This year, I am not hosting Thanksgiving. I usually do because it is my favorite holiday and I do all the cooking from scratch. However, even though I am not hosting, there are 4 "thanksgivings" parties/events I now need to cook for and bring things too. I find this SO MUCH more difficult than hosting. When I host I'm in control and I have all the information. Now when I bring, I have no idea if or how I'll be able to heat something up or if I am bringing a dish they already have or too similar to something else? Anyway... any suggestions? I don't want to bring the same things to all 4 things also.

I've already agreed to make:
-pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.
-cranberry sauce!

But here are some of my popular options to choose between for the other events:
-sweet potatoes with marshmallows
-string bean casserole
-grilled onion dip with chips
-apple pie
-pumpkin pie
-sweet potato pie
-chestnut, sausage stuffing

I never know, do I bring an appetizer or a side dish or a dessert. Anyway, any other Thanksgiving favorites? Let me know what recipes you love.

Re: Can We Start Talking THANKSGIVING?

I'm hosting my small family, and I starting planning my menu yesterday so that I can start some shopping.

When we go to my sister's or DH's cousin, I ask what I can bring to make things easier on them and me too.
Since I bake, I'm usually asked to bring dessert.

Instead of Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows, try my mom's super awesome recipe for Sweet Potato Casserole. It's up on my blog and it's literally TO DIE FOR! I get some many rave reviews for this recipe, you will not be disappointed. I don't even care for sweet potatoes myself but I can't stop eating this dish!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Can We Start Talking THANKSGIVING?

My advice is if you do bring an item that needs to be heated, put it in a microwave safe dish so it’s easier for the host

I usually host but this year with my kitchen Reno not being close to done, my MIL is hosting

I’m bringing a spinach pie for appetizer
Corn pudding side dish (can heat in micro)
Mac & cheese side dish (micro as well)

May do a fruit platter for dessert or some mini apple pies, possibly some roasted nuts. Haven’t decided yet

But yea - think of the need to refrigerate and heat before deciding. It kinda helps you decide !

Re: Can We Start Talking THANKSGIVING?

I have been hosting every year for about 6 years, but nobody ever brings anything, so for me I would say anything you bring would be such a blessing. But maybe reach out to the hosts and see where extras are needed. For me I tend to leave desserts last and end up buying extras bc I have no time to make them all from scratch, but everyone is different!

I can’t believe how fast it’s coming up and I really need to start my planning!

So bummed because I'm allergic to pecans (and most nuts). Is it worth it to make without the nuts or do they make the dish? Thinking maybe oats or just leave them out without a replacement?

The pecans in this recipe are about adding texture and crunch rather than flavor so try one of these substitutions. You can try replacing the pecans with other crunchy options such as oats, sunflower seeds, nut free granola, crushed gingersnaps or even pumpkin seeds.

Isn't it! I brought it last year and everyone was dying! You can order any flavor ice cream you want for inside. The outside is caramel, and the legs are ice cream cones Chat Icon Unfortunately no crunchies! But, I might stop at Carvel and get some to sprinkle on after we slice it Chat Icon I didn't order mine, I just grabbed what they had made already in the freezer, so we got vanilla this year.

You probably could however, I find that once you open crescent rolls and expose them to air, they tend to get a little "off colored". I personally like to make them right before serving, they come together quickly and easily.

I forgot to update. These cranberry bites were a big hit. They were very easy. I assembled them about 3 hours before guests arrived. No problem. I will definitely make them again.

(I trimmed the skin off the Brie which resulted in a lot of waste. I assume I was supposed to do that?)
