Alaska Cruise Lines
We've always talked about doing an Alaska cruise and FIL decided he wants to do it this summer.
None of us have ever gone on ANY cruise before so we don't know anything about the different cruise lines and different ships.
There will be 6 adults, 2 kids (6 and 4). We are not interested in a Disney cruise.
Has anyone been on an Alaska cruise they loved or have any advice as to where to even start?

We did it on the NCL Pearl many many years ago. It was a great experience for us. But we didn't have kids with us. We've debated over doing it with our kids, but to be honest I think they would be bored (too cold to swim) so the only way we would consider it again is on Disney which is crazy expensive for Alaska. (We've done a Disney cruise and it was literally the best vacation I've every had, so I know it's worth the price - but it's still a lot.)

Alaska Cruise Lines
ive heard good things about the new NCL ships that go to Alaska (Bliss). we did an NCL cruise with our son when he was 3, and it was nice- we really liked the "freestyle" dining that they do where you can pick from a couple different restaurants every night (like an irish pub, etc besides the main dining room.) We're doing Alaska this summer on Disney cruise line with our 8 and 5 year olds. this will be our 4th Disney cruise and they are really our favorite vacations!!! its definitely $$$$- but this is a splurge trip for DH and I 40th birthdays. we just like the really "family friendly" vibe they have- the reason they're more is because there is no casino bringing in extra revenue. BUT that also means no angry drunk people who just lost money HAHAHA and the deck entertainment is disney trivia and movies, rather than "hot legs" or 'belly flop" contests.... for us, its worth it. BUT like i said, our NCL cruise was great, too!

Re: Alaska Cruise Lines
I did one on Princess many years ago so my info is probably outdated. We also did the dome train and stayed in the lodge. On Princess there was nothing fun for kids whatsoever. The activities on the ship were very different from other cruises. There were nature and history lectures. The whole ship went to bed early. I did love my cruise but it was really the places we went and not the cruise itself. Cruising through glaciers was phenomenal.

Re: Alaska Cruise Lines
We cruised Holland America with our kids who were 5 & 7 at the time. It was a great experience and one of my favorite trips. We left round trip from Seattle, airfare was significantly cheaper that way for us.

Also wanted to add to look at the port times for all the lines, like how long you'll be in port. because you might be willing to pay more or less for extra time at each of the ports....

Re: Alaska Cruise Lines
My DH and FIL went in 2015. They went on the Holland America and had a blast. I believe they started in Vancouver and worked their way up or the other way around? I can't remember.
They also went in August which was recommended as the best month to go.

Re: Alaska Cruise Lines
Our first cruise was Alaska on Royal Caribbean back in 2006. Loved it. We want to do another one, but this time do a one way rather than round trip, preferably on Celebrity.
