Daycare/Pre-K Conundrum
OK, bear with me. this is going to be a long, confusing ramble.
Right now my DD goes to a big daycare/school campus in Queens. They go from daycare starting at 6 weeks to pre-k/kindergarten, charter school, and then eventually high school. I do LOVE the place- it runs like a well oiled machine. The teachers are great. DD loves it and I attribute most of her success (she's whip smart, eats/naps well, and potty trained like a breeze) to the school. It is, however, expensive. Though I haven't found another daycare I liked that would cost any less either. My original plan was to have her transfer to my old Catholic school (also in Queens, where my sister is also a teacher) for nursery this September. The cost for this would be about HALF of the cost of full time daycare at the school she attends now, even factoring in early arrival and after school hours. This is also a great school, I mean I went there, my whole family went there, my sister teaches there. I'm also not concerned about school holidays as my sister will be off for them as well and is more than willing to take my DD on off days. The problem is that NEXT year for Pre-K, they only have a UPK option. I cannot pay for her to go to Pre-K there and since I reside in Nassau county, she is not eligible for UPK. So I would have to move her again- either to another Catholic school in Queens or back to the original school/daycare that I planned to pull her from in September.
To further complicate things, I'm due with my DS in 2 weeks. He'll start at DD's current daycare in July of this year. While two of them are enrolled, I do get a 10% discount, but it does not compare to the savings I'd be getting by sending DD to the Catholic school nursery program. BUT if DD and DS both went to the same daycare, I would not have to split drop offs between two schools, I would not have to move DD around so much. Additionally, daycare provides food (breakfast, hot lunch, snacks) while the school only provides breakfast and snacks. I don't know what to do!!! Is the ease of drop offs/pick up and the stability worth an extra $400 a month? Maybe $300 if you factor in the food... That's a LOT of money! I just don't know.
What would YOU do?
ETA: Though my sister said she would take DD to work with her in the AM. I would just drop her at my sister's house which is ON THE WAY to the current daycare... where I will be dropping off DS anyway.

Daycare/Pre-K Conundrum
I would keep her where she is. I think between the juggling of going from place to place each day, moving her in a year and the food being provided doesn't out weigh the money you are saving.
I am always willing to "pay" for convenience if I can manage.
ETA: Its great to have your sister as a back up for days off or possible drop off but I think depending on another person (especially family) at some point always becomes an issue and I wouldn't wanna bother.

I agree. I don't like all that moving back and forth. I prefer stability when it comes to DD. And convenience when it comes to myself Worth every penny for both of those.

Ugh I know that's probably what's right but it sucks. That's an extra $4k a year! That's the spanky new minivan I was hoping to get.

To me, it sounds like to much change. I would stick with the current school.

Keep her where she is. In the grand scheme of things, $4k extra for one year is not that much. Plus, as you said, you will have to pay for extra food and more driving, so that number actually gets much smaller.

Nope, I already tried. I need to provide like 3 forms of proof- a utility bill, cable bill, license, rental agreement, house deed, bank statement, whatever...
ETA: And $4k is after factoring in food/travel. Ugh. This sucks. I wish childcare was more affordable. Childcare for these two costs more than my mortgage!

Re: Daycare/Pre-K Conundrum
But on the bright side- when they are both out of daycare and in school, you will feel like you just won the lotto with all the extra money each month!

Re: Daycare/Pre-K Conundrum
Is your long term plan the Catholic school?
If so, I would stomach the cost of the one extra year of daycare before PreK (which wouldn’t be open to you). Then you start her in K.

I would keep it as is only because I can say from experience trying to get 2 young kids to different schools in the morning is a huge hassle. And not having to pack lunches is huge....

I think I know the daycare you are talking about, a co worker of mine used them. But her son did UPK there, so wouldn't you run into the same problem? Or do they have a private class as well?

Agreed.
The convenience factor alone is worth any amount of money. You only have the one now but,you will see, when there is two or more involved, you will do anything to make things easier for yourself.

Keep her where she is. One drop off is worth more than $4k in savings for a year. And it would be hard to transition her for PreK3 and then again for PreK4.

They do have a private class. I just learned about it this week which is why I started to hesitate.
Catholic school is NOT the long term plan. I pay through the nose in taxes in my Nassau county district specifically because of the award winning schools so I plan to eventually have her there.
And OMG when these kids are both in public school I am going on a nice, big vacation.. without them. Maybe even without DH.

Honestlt I would move her now and then move her again, she is so little I honestly do not think it makes a difference, So 3 yrs old at catholic school, UPK at charter, and then back to catholic school? It is not ideal but if the 4k makes a big difference to your bottom line I would move her , kids are much more resilient than we are and she will be totally fine, she is so young the first couple days will be hard and then she will be totally over it, you have the summer break also right? or does she go in the summer?

She generally goes to daycare in the summer but she's only going two days a week since I'll be on maternity leave.

I would move her. $4,000 is pretty substantial. I'd try to put that savings towards something so when you are having a stressed morning you can say, at least I have X though...

Agreed, I wouldn’t worry about her switching schools. My only concern would be two different drop offs. But if your sister can help, seems like it wouldn’t be so bad.
