If you have children in daycare/pre-school
Do you generally attend things like their concerts/shows if they occur during work hours?
Ds has a spring concert today at 3:45. I didnt go to the winter one because it was at 2:30 and I was working. I feel bad, so I'm leaving work early to make it but I just wonder how many other parents actually attend these things.

Yea, that's my feeling on it too. I want to see these things and its so cute, but I put my child in daycare because I HAVE to go to work. I feel like they should do these things after work hours when parents can actually attend.

Re: If you have children in daycare/pre-school
I think daycare is different than preschool. Daycare really doesn't do any events b/c they know all the parents work. They do have 1 event a year and they try their best to do it later so parents can attend. The Halloween parade and show (each class sings) First year I went in later to work so I can watch him and last year I was lucky to be on maternity with DS2. This yr (b4 deciding I'm staying home) I already put in a request to work a half day anyway so I can see the show and then take him home to trick or treat.
Preschool does events, but I'm sure not all parents can make it.
Oh, and the daycare even does a graduation on the weekend b/c they know parents can't make it

Ann is in daycare and I try to leave work early on days that they have events (Mother's Day Tea, Valentine's Day party, etc). They usually hold them at 3PM.

Re: If you have children in daycare/pre-school
My daycare/preschool does them, and I take off early to attend. DH rarely attends because of his work schedule, so I'm the one who typically takes off. There's only been a few times where neither of us could go, but I try to make it. It's hard when it's in the middle of a work day!

Re: If you have children in daycare/pre-school
DD is in daycare and just started not too long ago, so there haven't been any events yet. I would think that they would at least try to schedule them late in the day to allow working parents to participate.
Otherwise, I'd probably take a half day or a day off.

Re: If you have children in daycare/pre-school
DS is in daycare and every other month or so they have an event. It sucks - I always feel conflicted about going or not. When I've gone I feel bad for the kids without their parents there - it just stinks all around! It would be fine if I didn't take so much additional time off when he's sick and I can't send him - urgh!

Re: If you have children in daycare/pre-school
I go to all the day care events. They are usually at 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., so I'll either leave work early or work from home. DH attends when he can, but he can't make all of them bacause of work. My manager and co workers are flexible, but he works in a different atmosphere.
And they don't have many... Halloween parade, Christmas Pageant, etc.

Re: If you have children in daycare/pre-school
They usually schedule them late afternoon, so I leave wrok early and go. DH doesn't have as flexible schedule as me, so he doesn't always go. He missed the winter concert. my dad came instead. they have a dance recital at preschool next week and he changed his schedule to make it.

Re: If you have children in daycare/pre-school
DS just had an Earth Day Planting event - 9 kids in the class, I was the only parent. For th holidays they did ginger bread houses - my mom needed to burn vaca time so she went to that. I went on his first field trip in October.

Re: If you have children in daycare/pre-school
Ugh.
I want to go I can go But i hate going (eta: only because it used to cause AJ so much suffering)
We have a mother's day brunch on Friday the 11th of May and I'm dreading it. I love going, its not exactly fun, but I feel bad for the kid whose parents can't make it. I want AJ to know we are always there for her (something my Dad couldn't do because of the Navy, then later he coudn't do my HS stuff because of my twin brothers and sister).
Leaving her is hard. They've stopped all day time stuff for the kids under 3yrs of age. Its just too painful. The crying goodbyes, the kids trying to literally run out to stay with mommy or daddy.
At 3 tho, its been a LOOOOT better. Jim had a Daddy's day thing during the week of the Rodeo (since father's day is during the summer break) he said she let him leave painlessly.
But yes. Every Single Time they offer something for her at school that we can attend and bask in pride, ... one of us, if not both of us, will be there.
Upcoming so far we have my mother's day brunch then on the 19th (a weekend) we have interntaional festival. Fall Festival is also a weekend. They do try to keep stuff to weekends.
ETA: My office (as mentioned before) is very family heavy so nothing is thought when I say "Hey Im taking a half day - AJ school stuff" haha

Re: If you have children in daycare/pre-school
My DD is 2. She goes to daycare. They do "special" activities too often for my taste since they are always around 10:30 am and the reason she is there is because I work. Fortunately, I work down the road from her daycare and can leave for 1/2 hr to attend but I wish they didn't do that. Besides, she is so young and cries when I leave her there and go back to work!

Re: If you have children in daycare/pre-school
So far the only thing at DD's daycare during working hours has been the Halloween costume parade and the party afterwards that parents are invited to stay for. She has been there for 2 Halloweens and I always leave work early, go see her, then go home and work from home. Or I work from home all day. But my job is flexible like that. My boss is truly a saint. (in SOME ways that is.. )
