Re: Kitchen reno - countertops come out different heights

It should never be that much difference. I can understand all of the counters being 37 vs 36 because of shimming, leveling, etc, but all of them should be the same height.

Has anyone done a kitchen reno and countertops came out different by an inch or so? Say 36 inch height for one wall and then island on one end is 37 and 36 1/2 on other end? Is it never exactly 36 inches high?

Put a level on it and see whether its level.

I could see the room being off 1/2" over 10' and the cabinets being installed level, which would mean you'd have the countertop at 1/2" different from the floor.

This is what happened. Middle of floor dips down making it a longer measurement. Now I understand. I should have done floors too and maybe would have avoided this.

Def check with a level. It can be off a bit depending on your floor. But not by a whole inch. We have a wood floor so it’s not completely even, but my contractor shimmed the cabinets to get everything as even as possible before counters were installed.

It's all level but where the floor dips a bit, it measures higher from floor to countertop as I am measuring from a lower floor

That is not ok. Your contractor should have made sure your cabinets were level.

yes, but if the floor is not level and the counters are level, you're going to have a difference in height between the floor and the counter.

This is what happened. We opted to not redo floor. So this is what happened

They should have put small pieces of wood under the cabinets to level them.

They did. That's what threw me when I measured from the floor up. They were all level after putting the pieces of wood under cabinets but the measurements were different from floor to top on each because my floor is very uneven.

that is not good. What is underneath your kitchen? You may need to buttress the flooring under your kitchen.
