WWYD: which job would you take?
I recently had a former boss reach out to me and, after I interviewed, he offered me a position at his new company. I can’t decide if I should stay at current job or switch to the new one... I listed pros and cons... please someone help me decide! Benefits are a non-issue.
Job 1 (current job) -Unpaid overtime nights and weekends (approximately 20 hours per month) -Stressful environment -Amazing boss who is stretched thin but very demanding / condescending higher-ups who I also basically report to and interact with daily -4 weeks vacation and have been there over 10 years so I have a lot of seniority -Extremely large corporation (over 30,000 employees) -I’m not particularly fulfilled by what I do -Recent layoffs (my reviews have been great but you never know) -1 mile walk from parking lot to office in snow and wind 6 months out of the year (I live upstate and it’s miserable) -Salary = +6% higher (not a deal breaker to me)
Job 2 (new job) -No overtime required :) / seems like less overall stress (ping pong table in the office!) -Needy boss who is a workaholic (I have worked for him before and know he will email me all night, all weekend, etc. As of now he is saying I don’t need to work outside of the workday but am worried because I know his style) -Great parking right next to office building (this makes a huge difference in commute time / general happiness when you aren’t walking 15 mins in snow and wind every morning and afternoon) -Small company (50 employees) not for profit -Corporate mission seems fulfilling and something I really believe in and am really excited by -3.5 weeks vacation -Salary -6% lower than current job but possible annual increase of 5-10% based on performance/merit so after one year would probably even out -May be able to voice your ideas/opinions more because of smaller setting -higher-ups appear more approachable

This is a hard one. The new job sounds good especially because of the no overtime. With the no overtime the salary is comparable. It is a risk because you have been with the other company so long. I'd probably take the new job if it was me.

I think I need more information. While your first job has gone through recent layoffs, it seems like a large company. This new company... is it new? What is the revenue like? Is it a sustainable company? Smaller companies sometimes make me nervous but if you feel there is pig term sustainability, I would take job 2

The new company has been around since 2006 but it is primarily state and federally funded, which makes me a little nervous for long term stability. It is trying to launch a for-profit business side, but it is still in infancy.

Also, would you give current job the opportunity to counter offer? Or is that bad to do?

Can new job match your salary? If not, I would definitely have them at least match your vacation.

Oh it’s definitely legal and it’s definitely miserable in the snow and wind. It’s in a larger city (upstate) so they say that is the only available space/parking lot for employees. The kicker? I pay about $1000 per year for the luxury of parking “closer” than their other available lots (some people have to take a bus from their parking lot!!!).

That’s insane. What if you’re injured/disabled? Or elderly? Or 9 months pregnant?? I’d leave that job for that factor alone

Long term stability and seniority is key and anything requiring federal funding would be very risky. You say no overtime is required for job 2 but your boss might be needy with after hours requests or emails. That sounds like overtime to me. FMLA eligibility has to be at least 50 people in the company. How are the benefits, retirement plans in the new place? Why is the new company looking to hire you? Are you replacement of someone who left or is it a “new role” and they are expanding? I am usually very skeptical of smaller companies due to personal experiences.
My husband’s job has a great deal of stability so I’m not really put off by that aspect. I’m also on his benefits, which are excellent. I’d have to ask about FMLA - that is a very good point. The retirement plan is a little worse at the new job (current job they match up to 6%, new place is 3%).
I’m not sure how my boss will be with the new job. I’ve worked for him in the past, and he was very needy and literally emailed me all night and all weekend. The new job is a different environment with seemingly fewer deadlines, but I’m not sure if he will still “manage” the same way.
The position is a new one for Job 2. They are expanding their finance team.

Re: WWYD: which job would you take?
I would take the new job. I left a great job at a huge company with excellent benefits to take a risk at a much smaller company (I believe I was the 8th employee hired). I loved it, it was a great job, I advanced my career a lot and ended up making a lot more in the long run. But ultimately you need to go with your gut...

That parking sounds like my job! Except I pay $200 a year lol

Re: WWYD: which job would you take?
I'd go with #2. Sounds like less stress overall. Maybe see if they will match your current vacation time.

My gut is telling me #2. However, like others said...ask for more Money or more vacation.

Re: WWYD: which job would you take?
Thanks so much ladies... I appreciate the input! I really can't talk to any of my friends about this because they are all my current coworkers and obviously don't want me to leave
I went back to job #2 today and asked for a signing bonus to make up for the hit in salary and a later start date by one week. They said "no" to the sign-on bonus and said their salary offer couldn't come up but said I would be eligible for a merit increase after 6 months. Vacation is standard for everyone.
It's been a rough two years at my current job and I just think I need a change.

If didnt hurt to ask and just from a stress standpoint it sounds like 2 may be the better option. Atleast you have worked for this manager before so you aren't going in completely blind.

Exactly. And also you need to factor in you won’t be paying the $1k for parking anymore, which is great (offsets the salary decrease a little). Good luck!
