Living close to your family or his job? WWYD

Im having trouble with this situation. We are inthe market for a house here on Long Island. My DH's job is in the middle of Nassau county and my family is in eastern suffolk.

If we bought a house close to our families, I could go to work and make more money 3 days a week and have a babysitter on the drop of a dime. Two parents are both retired somewhat and are willing to come over whenever as long as the drive is decent.

If we bought a house close to dh's job. DH would have a shorter commute by 20 minutes each way a day. BUT I dont have a job there and I wouldnt be able to rely on anyone being there to babysit with out it being a hassle. I would pretty much be on my own.

I guess you can say this is my first baby and I dnot know what to expect. I feel that having the help with in hands reach is comforting. Am I nuts??? Any advice??

i would move closer to the parents. a 20 minute longer commute both ways is not that long compared to everything else you'd have to give up.

def. move closer to the parents! how nice it would be to have a babysitter at the drop of a dime! 20 minutes extra is not a big deal, i think your husband will get used to it quick.

We live in Manhattan right now, which is where DH's job is. We are in contract with a house in Long Island because my family lives there and we can have good free babysitting at the drop of a dime. DH will have a significantly longer commute now and I will probably wind up seeing him less. He isn't loving the idea of a long commute but we think it is the best move for our family.

We had a similiar choice. I live 30-40 min from mom, 30 min from my sister, and 1 hr from my other sister.
We live 10 min from his parents.

I wanted to be closer to my family but my work is in suffolk and my husband is 5 min from work. I wish I was closer but since DH is in law enforcement I wanted him closer to work so he is not as tired at work and doesn't need an added 30 min commute.

We chose family (except my parents who live in NYC). DH commutes to Coney Island for work (tho he works nights) and I work out here.

Works for us.

We chose family, and DH's commute is now 15-20 mins longer. I think 20 mins is nothing!

we chose family....

we had a choice of midnassau(15-20 minutes from our family) or western suffolk (30-40 minutes from our family) but of course a bigger house in suffolk.... dh thought being closer to family would be better(even though you only see them on weekend)....this was before kids- and now im glad he talked me into it- because it will be sooo much easier if I ever need relatives to come watch the babyChat Icon

closer to family, you'll appreciate the help. 20 more minutes is not that bad as long as it is not already a really far trip.

family. from someone who has no family around, definitely family would be my first choice if I had that option.
