Roach question

So this is absolutely gross to me and slightly mortifying
Recently I posted about wanting to move and wasn’t so honest because I’m mortified
We have rented the top of a house for 8 years and love it UNTIL recently
There are new tenants below us (absentee landlord) and they are filthy!!!
Never in 8 years did we have a bug up here and all the sudden about 3 weeks ago there are roaches!
I’m skeeved beyond belief! My landlord said they are coming from the downstairs apartment because they are dirty!! I’ve only seen about 6 but I’m sure there are more.
Anyway we are moving thank god we found a place rather quickly and I can’t wait! I refuse to sleep in the bedroom because I saw roaches on the walls....so I’ve been sleeping on the couch (DH thinks I’ve lost my mind lol)
So it’s 3:50 am and I’m wide awake because it happened, a huge roach woke me by crawling on my leg! I grabbed it and was able to kill it!
Here’s my question
Do we take our brand new couches or sell them?!! Are they in the couch and we will be moving with roaches?!?!
I’m freaking the F out!!!!!!!
I know I sound insane
And if you’re thinking why no get an exterminator...the dirty couple downstairs refused because they have pet bunnies and won’t let anyone in to spray!!!
Monday can’t come soon enough

Re: Roach question

You don’t sound insane. Similar thing happened to me at my last Brooklyn apartment and I wanted to die! I’m also allergic to roaches - so theres that too.

I didn’t take anything with me but clothes and they were washed at laundromat beforehand just in case. So I’m Not much help there. But I’m pretty sure you can get them cleaned and check them really well for any signs of life. And if god forbid you do bring a few with you, once you exterminate, they should be gone if you’re in a clean building. Where there’s more than 1, there’s many. For now, keep lights on when you can. Get some raid traps and spray.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I completely understand how you feel.

Re: Roach question

Ugh same thing happened at our old place but with the neighbors. It was HORRIFIC. We tried everything to get rid of them but couldn't! They don't generally go in things like a couch though- more like kitchen/bathroom. We took our couch with us and haven't seen a roach since we moved in over 3 years. I still have PTSD though- I see a black speck and go ballistic... and it turns out to be a bit of dirt or a leaf or something. Chat Icon

Chat Icon OMG that's awful! I'm glad you're able to move so quickly!

I don't really have any advice except to just check everything as you pack it to make sure it's clean. You can always get a treatment at your new house to make sure no critters came with you.

I'm actually SHOCKED that a landlord would allow the downstairs tenants to live like that. He's going to have a really hard time re-renting your apartment out when you move if it's that bad! Blech.

They don't live in couches. Mainly in the kitchen. I've lived in apartments all my life until i got married and had to deal with them alot. If your still worried, i would get some roach foggers and put them in your apartment usually that will kill some in your apartment and the rest will flee and go back downstairs.

I had this problem in my first apartment. Thankfully my best friend's DH at the time was an exterminator and would come and spray for me once a month!

I was worried about bringing them with me when I moved too. He told me not to worry about couches and furniture. He did tell me that they like the glue in cardboard boxes. He told me to spray each box BEFORE I packed it and to empty the boxes and put them OUTSIDE immediately when I got to the new place. I followed his advice and I never saw a roach in my new apartment.

He also told me NEVER to take the boxes from a place like Costco or the supermarket and if I get a delivery in a cardboard box to empty it and put it outside immediately - no matter where it's from. I haven't seen a roach since.

Good luck.

He is in for a rude awakening!!!! We don’t have a lease and he’s been an absolute nightmare the past year! Just recently the central air went out and the breaker is in the downstairs apartment. My DH and him went down and my DH waited outside while he went in. My husband said he came out white as a ghost! He asked what’s wrong and the landlord said “I can’t believe what it looks like in there! Mosquitos and flys everywhere and it’s like they are hoarding things and garbage and boxes everywhere”
All he did was have a talk with them and said he would be inspecting their apt again. Within that time we saw the first roach and realized they have to be coming in from downstairs through the walls. The girl has pet bunnies so she refuses to let him fog the place or get an exterminator so for the past 2 weeks absolutely nothing has been done! We on the other hand have those traps set everywhere and I’ve been cleaning like crazy! I’ve only seen one or 2 here and there but even 1 is enough for me! My DH was super understanding and told me to start looking and thank goodness I came across a really nice place in Merrick (we are in Bellmore and coincidentally I grew up in Merrick so I’m super happy)!
My heart is still pounding from last night. My husband thinks it came from the baseboard and just wound up on the couch, it was the first time I’ve seen one not in the kitchen or bedroom but again 1 is enough to get us the hell out of here!!!!!
I’m such a germaphobe so this is really having a bad effect on me! Thank goodness for Xanax and cheers to a new apartment! Lol
But for real, the landlord sucks
We want to just disappear (but my DH says we are better then that and can’t not tell him we are leaving)

Re: Roach question

I'm glad you're able to move!! After a roach crawling on my leg I would probably be in hotel.

But as a side note, how can a tenant refuse to allow an exterminator in if there is evidence of infestation? That's horrible and disgusting. And the fact that people would willingly live with a roach problem that bad, it makes me sick to my stomach.

Thank you so much
You and I always seem to have so many of the same stories Chat Icon
It’s so unfortunate
We literally bought new couches we love they aren’t even fully paid off yet and I want to throw them out! From what I read they don’t live in couches or lay eggs there but still omg I can’t handle any of this! My heart is non stop pounding

I don’t understand either
The girl sent me a text that she’s so sorry and hope we don’t hate her. I was really mean and that’s not like me but I feel like they took our home we loved of 8 years away from us. The landlord said she has the right to refuse him coming in or spraying and that’s absolutely disgusting to me. It’s also super selfish! I ask myself the same questions....how can she live like that!!?
Oh and yes, my bags are packed we are sleeping in a hotel until we can move in Monday! My husband said i look like shit (thanks honey lol) but I never went back to sleep since 3am as I sat like a crazy person with a flashlight waiting for more to appear (none did thank goodness)

Yikes!!

If you love your couches I would have them professionally cleaned. I am sure they have dealt with things like this before.

Even if they don't live in couches I would still get them cleaned.

Good luck!!

Sorry you are going through this. I lived in an apartment and as a preventative measure I never did it but not sure if they can refuse. My gut tells me your landlord probably didn’t want to spend the money and also is happy to see you go. If you have been there 8 years I am sure they will hike the rent a decent amount since the market has increased so much.

I am SO sorry you are dealing with that as I know its a horror! That is putting it lightly. Chat Icon

I also would be getting Zero sleep. There would be no way since any other bug does the same to me.

How anyone can live like that in those conditions is beyond me? Are they foreign and maybe not used to such a "cleanliness" of a culture?

I’m getting myself together and heading to my in laws now to nap and then later we are going to either stay there or a hotel
I’m so tired
I literally haven’t slept in days
Plus I have bad health conditions and my body can’t take this stress I just know I’m bound to get sick
I’m a a nervous wreck

Can you believe they are just a normal nice looking couple in their late 20s
Both from Levittown
You would NEVER know how dirty they are by looking at them. It’s seriously mind boggling to me
And I agree! Those bunnies!!! Their cage probably has who knows what in it! My FIL said if we are seeing just a few here and there they must have 100’s and in the walls looking for ways to get out! That didn’t help my nerves at all lol and he’s a bug expert, literally, that’s his profession!
Definitely having the couches cleaned and as someone else mentioned I do believe the landlord doesn’t care if we leave at all! It’s probably a blessing to him! Our rent has been the same for all these years
I do feel bad as far as money is concerned...we are literally spending $1500 more in rent now in the new apartment which is small but MUCH nicer! I hate change but it has to be done and I’m just hoping everything works out
This whole situation sucks!!!!!!!

Yes
Just a few but enough to get us out of here and fast!!!!
I’ve literally only seen about 6 and we put combat traps everywhere and haven’t seen them since
Absolutely disgusting
Their apartment is FILLED with garbage and boxes it’s disgusting
My DH and I looked in their windows when they weren’t home
I don’t understand how people live like that!
It’s not like they aren’t home all the time and are busy and whatnot
They are home every day from 5 on and leave at 8 in the morning
They are just lazy and disgusting pigs and selfish! So excited to get out of here

Sorry you are going through this. I lived in an apartment and as a preventative measure I never did it but not sure if they can refuse. I agree.

The tenant may have the right to refuse if that's the way the lease was written, but I highly doubt the owner of a property would give that right to their tenant. Very unusual. The more likely clause in the lease is the owner has the right to entry for maintenance and such.

I think the landlord does not what to pay for an exterminator. He may also be interested in re-renting your unit and trying to increase the price. But again, a new tenant will not want roaches, so there's that...

He seriously sucks
He hasn’t responded to my call or text since last Wednesday and same for my DH...it’s like he disappeared or just doesn’t want to deal with any of this.
It’s a big house, we rent the upstairs, there are tenants below us AND tenants in the back so 3 apartments, mine is illegal....the people below me are having the same roach problem it’s from the couple in the back...not one of us has a lease. So needless to say, we are leaving and telling him to keep our security deposit and the roaches lol
It’s just unbelievable to me how he could just be so la la la about this
He doesn’t even know we are leaving yet!! He’s in for a rude awakening or hey maybe he will be happy but honestly this is the first problem in the 8 years we have been there. Hoping this whole disaster is a blessing in disguise :(

Where is your apartment located? And what sort of roaches are you finding? The small ones that typically infest or the huge ones with wings? Either way, I wouldn't get rid of the couch- just wipe it down if you are skeeved.

Some are big and some are small
We are getting the couch professionally cleaned before it goes in the new place. They are literally brand new, we haven’t even finished paying them off yet so we decided to get them cleaned
I did buy all new bedding
New kitchen stuff
Throwing out the area rugs and stuff like that and all our clothes is being brought to the cleaners just to be on the safe side
I almost want to have an exterminator in the new apartment right after we move in just to be super extra careful
I’m so skeeved by this whole situation
