Contacts for teenager

My 14 yr old just got contacts and none of us have had them so I am clueless. He was given the 2 week Acuvue. We paid $145 for the contact fitting and they said he should be fitted every year (then every two years) which would be $95. Is this really necessary? If we go to the Opthomologist yearly, do we have to go to the Optomotrist as well yearly?

Also, could anyone advise as to where the best/cheapest place to get contacts? We paid $150 (I believe for 6 months but it could be 3....was confused when we left and have to pick up contacts next week, where I'll know better). I looked at Walgreens and they have 25% off contacts right now so I already see I will be able to get them cheaper. In that case would we still have to visit the glasses place where the optomotrist is ot just Opthomologist?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just so lost on this subject.

Yes. You need to go yearly. It’s a prescription basically and it expires. For buying contacts I just google and buy what’s the cheapest. 1-800. Coastal contacts, etc.

You do need to go every year but you don't need to go to both. I see an optometrist at Visionworks every year for my eye exam. I only go to an ophthalmologist if I am having an issue. In fact my insurance won't allow me to see an ophthalmologist for a routine, yearly exam... because we have vision coverage through them at Visionworks.

I get my contacts through them as well now because my plan covers a year's supply

My 12 year old has been wearing contacts for 2 years. We use the ophthalmologist for fittings yearly, but she wears dailies. She is now wearing them every day so we may switch to the 2 week or monthlies. I feel like my ophthalmologist is very knowledgeable and keeps up with the current knowledge in the field, so we use him instead of an optometrist. I usually order our contacts through 1-800-contacts, though since it’s 2 of us now, I’ll probably price them out a bit.

Yes you have to go every year for fittings, one of the most necessary things you do when wearing contacts. Optometrist and ophthalmologists are completely different . You should be seeing an ophthalmologists yearly since they deal with diseases of the eye. Optometrists are better in the fitting of glasses and contacts so that's who I go to for that. But an ophthalmologist can do it also. As for price, I prefer getting my contacts from my optometrist and its only $95 every six months so I never bothered to look around for a better price.

It depends on where you get them from. I had been getting mine at the same place for 7 years and they kept ordering the same prescription. Finally I decided I didn’t want to drive to queens to get them and that was a mistake because I had to get a new eye exam and now they make me go back every year. I need to find some sort of black market. I hate going and I hate paying for an exam every year when I know the prescription hasn’t changed.

I go every other year. I buy contacts right when I get the prescription and then again right before the prescription expires unless I have a noticeable change my vision.

I feel it's always good to go to the ophthalmologist once a year. The prescription can change and they will dilate your pupil, etc, to check all is alright. DS goes every year. When he needed glasses, we went to an optometrist with the prescription to have glasses made. Same this year, when he wanted contacts, we went to the optometrist for the fitting -he is 13-. We went to lens crafters and ordered for a year and got a rebate. Not sure if we would need to go next year if the prescription changes. DS wears disposable contacts. Those were suggested so he won't get infections. I agreed since I had that experience growing up with permanent contacts. Now I order mine online from a cheap please called Hubble. Since it is DS's first experience I didn't want to go that route with him.

We only go to an optometrist, who does the eye exam and we order the initial contacts from. The fitting fee is a crock of horse sh!t to me. Once you know how to put them in you don't need to be fitted again.

I order from lensdiscounters.com after the initial purchase. Way cheaper.

You need annual visits for contact lenses because after a year, they will not fill the rx. He can probably switch to the ophthalmologist every 2 years as long as he has not underlying issues. So yes, every 2 years he will see 2 doctors for his eyes. If you space them 6 months apart it does not seem so bad.
