dance studios in nassau that leave the door open!
DD loves to dance, and really liked the place we were bringing her to until about 3 weeks in. That is when they started shutting the door to keep the kids from being distracted from their parents. She would panic with the other kids and they told the parents not to open the door to get them and to leave them all until they got used to it. After a few weeks of dealing with that, DD refused to go to dance and a bunch of moms pulled their kids out too lol... They are only in the 3-4 age group, and we're looking for somewhere RELAXED where the kids can have fun dancing but can also still see us and know we haven't just disappeared and left them there.
Anyone love their kid's dance studio? thanks!

My DD’s school is awesome but even the youngest class (2.5-3) can’t see their parents. There’s a window where the parents can see in but the kids can’t really tell the parents are there. That’s pretty standard-kids that age are unlikely to pay attention if they’re distracted by their parents.
My DD is in her third year of dance and I’ve never seen a parent open the door to get a child unless they had to go to the bathroom. Honestly, I’d say the teachers need to do a better job engaging the kids if they’re trying to escape.

All 3 of my girls are in dance (twins are almost 5, and a 3 yr old), and even when they started at 2, I was not allowed to watch. Parents can be a huge distraction. Maybe look into a school that has a mommy & me dance class?

I used to teach dance and this is normal. We had one day where the parents could watch, but that was it. This was 25 years ago, so maybe things have changed.
Parents are a distraction, so I’d suggest some class that you can do with your child.

This seems pretty standard at the dance schools I know. I don’t know of any schools with open door policies.

yeah i'm thinking if she's that worried about me being in there, then she's probably just not ready for dance. I may wait until next school year and revisit

My daughters studio used to keep the door open. It was new so the owner didn’t seem to realize what a distraction it was. Every 5 seconds a kid wanted their mom, pretended that needed the bathroom, needed water. Not to mention the moms that were constantly calling their kids over to adjust hair, tights, telling them to pay attention. Subsequent years they now keep the door closed.

At 3 it just may be too early for your child. Every child is different. I will say if you put your child in preschool or nursery school they will have to go through the same thing.

Not sure where you are but I believe Dance Works in Port Washington had a Mommy and Me dance class for that age group.

My dd dance studio doesn't leave the doors open either--even the older teenagers that I've seen have the door closed.

DD started dance at 2 and they never left the door open. The kids need time to adjust. 3 week isn't a lot of time consider it's just once a week.
She's in her third year of dance now and she barely says bye as she runs in the room to dance.

DD has been in dance since she was 2 and with the exception of the first few weeks where they transition they always shut the door. We watch them on monitors in the waiting area. I think shutting the door is standard for most dance studios.

My daughter started a 2.5 at her dance studio and she is now 4. Parents were never allowed in because its a distraction. Some kids were criers (not mine) and they asked the same, to not get them because that is a way they learn to be unattached to you. Just like when you drop them off at daycare or something like that. They get used to it. However, there were some that just did not and those kids had attachment issues and were not ready for it. Your child may just not be ready for something like dance school. I would just look into a maybe just some mommy and me type classes.

My daughter goes to a non competitive school so it is more relaxed.... there is a sliding door that opens and closes to the parent waiting area, however any kid or parent that wants to come in and out its not an issue like if their kid is crying, has to go to the bathroom etc.
