I’m a former teacher and I love to teach other kids. But holy he!l, I’m on day 3 of this with my own kid and want to rip my hair out.

How do you guys do it?! Hats off to you guys. You must be watching the rest of us complain about this situation and snicker quietly. Chat Icon

How old is your child? Honestly at this point I will just be happy if they don’t regress.
Read every single day. Go over math facts based on grade level (addition, multiplication, etc). We practice multiplication facts when my daughter is in the shower. Other subjects can probably wait.
My older DD has specific assignments on her computer from the teachers, so they’ll comment if something wasn’t done or was half assed.

Re: Parents who have always homeschooled...

I think there is an enormous difference between kids in 4th and up vs prek to 3rd. If both you and your spouse work, or a single parent work, having an older child do independent work is so so much easier than a younger child. The younger child needs so much more hand holding and instruction time with individual attention. I am basically sitting there to make sure my kids are in tract v talking to friends. My nephew is 3. Both parents work. So now I am having facetime with him and my kids read him a story to keep him occupied so that his parents have a break for a minute. It is much harder on younger kids who really don't understand why their whole world has abruptly changed.

Parents who have always homeschooled...

My son is in Kindergarten and I teach 9th grade science. Our days have been a total $hitsh*w. He's been starting his day watching DIY Science with Steve Spangler on Amazon Prime for an hour. Science - check (lol). He then does math, which takes him no time at all since he loves math. Reviewing sight words and practicing "tapping it out" though are going to be the death of me. I'm only doing about 45 minutes of school work a day because that is all I can handle. We also read to him daily. If we wind up not going back to school, I plan on hiring a tutor for the summer and calling it a day. Oh and we go PE every day for my own sanity.

With that said, if you do have a Kindergartner, I have been making every thing into a game. We did hopscotch with sight words and I filled Easter eggs with little strips of paper that have sight words written on them so we could hunt for them. I put up a "word wall" in our dining room so we can play "I spy" at meal time.

Meanwhile, I am also trying to plan and execute lessons for my HS students, who can not navigate online learning at all so I am fielding questions literally ALL day. Kids are texting me at 11 pm...
