Covid-19 and mental illness
I keep hearing this is going to last for months. I am truly worried about those with mental illnesses. I don’t personally suffer from depression and I’m finding myself beyond depressed with life right now. This is no way to live. No social interaction. No work. Money is tight. I can’t imagine those who are already battling depression and how they feel.
Do you think this will really last long?! We are going to begin to lose people to suicide and destroy small business and people’s life savings over this. I spoke to a friend who owns a small business and she said she is probably closing up for good if this goes on for months. And then what do we do if this comes around next winter? Do this again?? I’m praying this doesn’t go on until the summer.

Re: Covid-19 and mental illness
I hear ya. I've been thinking this from the beginning. And was talking with a friend about it a few days ago. I know everyone is saying this is what needs to be done to save lives. We may be saving lives from the virus. But we're going to loose lives for different reasons. Maybe not as many but nobody is talking about this. I really am worried.

Suicide rates will go up. I hate to even think this way but between the social isolation and people losing everything don’t doubt it will happen...

I know. I feel like walking amongst the virus you may have an x% chance of dying (whatever that number is today) But for a lot of people, these measures will give them a much higher chance of dying than this virus every would.

Re: Covid-19 and mental illness
I really don’t think this type of lockdown will go on for months. I do think social distancing will last longer, which is why we keep hearing school could possibly be over with for this year. Can’t keep distant in that type of setting. I think we’ll have a better chance of finding a new normal as soon as they are sure this new drug cocktail can do what they are seeing it do so far. Because at least then, you get sick , get swabbed , if +, you get meds. Sorta like with the flu now and tamiflu. Will it work for everyone? Probably not. But maybe they’ll be more than 1 thing to try within a few weeks so there’s something for everyone.
That’s my hope and I’m sticking with that thought.
As I lay in bed with a raging anxiety attack for the past 20 minutes. Deep. Slow. Breaths.

Re: Covid-19 and mental illness
I’ve been having an anxiety attack for about a week. I cannot imagine how this will affect those that really need help. I would probably stock up on meds right now (not in dire need in my situation), but then I have anxiety about overwhelming the health system. But I can take deep breaths and be fine.

Re: Covid-19 and mental illness
It is definitely a shock to the system and people are already exhibiting bad anxiety and depression - so I can't imagine how much worse it is for people that have more serious mental illness. For myself, I kind of feel like I'm grieving - mourning our old way of life that we will not get back because there WILL now be a "new" normal. And we didn't even have a warning or a chance to say goodbye....it was just taken away and the whole world changed. That is tough.
