Don't they have the hospitals set up into two parts there now? They have that here. If you have COVID symptoms, you are sent to another ER section. Then again the hospitals are huge here. Can't he just go to that part of the hospital?

If you need ER and haven't kept up with your payments (if you are a freelancer), they are not by law allowed to refuse you (same in the US), but you don't get charged thousands. It would be the with a 20 Euro surcharge. That's it. So you are sent to the non-emergency section and taken care of there. You might have to wait a few hours sometimes (depends on the hospital).

But we have enough beds here, so maybe that is the problem there? They also have, as I have learned in the past few days, that you can call an ambulance (I hear the sirens all night long) and they will help you at home with no surcharge. They will come here and check you, take your blood and do tests if needed and check up with you the next day and day after that. I can't really get routine check ups, but if I want to go to the after hours doctor (special hours; I went for a mouth infection and it took about an hour; got my prescription for the after hours pharmacy and it cost me 5 Euro), I can go. For example, if you give birth here, vaginally or Cesarean, you stay in the hospital for a week. Then you have a midwife check up on you once a day to help you for about a few weeks. They help you walk and teach you what to do, depending on your situation. I find it appalling that they don't do that there. They might help you do little things. Then you get your three or one year maternity or paternity) leave. Then you get Kindergeld (child money) or Elterngeld (parent money) until they are a certain age. Socialism isn't so bad.

That is absolutely not the case here at all. I don't know when you moved abroad but that was never the case in the US.

It would be unwise for a senior to go to the ER to have a cath flushed even in normal times. That is not something you would go to the ER for.

Don't they have the hospitals set up into two parts there now? They have that here. If you have COVID symptoms, you are sent to another ER section. Then again the hospitals are huge here. Can't he just go to that part of the hospital?

If you need ER and haven't kept up with your payments (if you are a freelancer), they are not by law allowed to refuse you (same in the US), but you don't get charged thousands. It would be the with a 20 Euro surcharge. That's it. So you are sent to the non-emergency section and taken care of there. You might have to wait a few hours sometimes (depends on the hospital).

But we have enough beds here, so maybe that is the problem there? They also have, as I have learned in the past few days, that you can call an ambulance (I hear the sirens all night long) and they will help you at home with no surcharge. They will come here and check you, take your blood and do tests if needed and check up with you the next day and day after that. I can't really get routine check ups, but if I want to go to the after hours doctor (special hours; I went for a mouth infection and it took about an hour; got my prescription for the after hours pharmacy and it cost me 5 Euro), I can go. The hospital is sectioned off quite well, with smoking sections, lol.

I don't know, but if I ever had a baby (don't want them), I would want to stay and get all the help I could. They also do the well checks a few days after the baby is born, so you kind of need to be there if your baby is there. They just basically want to make sure everyone is fine and in good health before releasing you.

The midwife is the one who does most of the work here. You have your OB/GYN and get about three scans, but that OB/GYN is not at the hospital with you. The midwife is (depending on if they can at your chosen hospital) and whatever doctor is on their shift there. The midwife is comes to your home during and after. They will teach you everything about the birth and any questions you have. The OB/GYN visits are only for medical stuff. After they come everyday for about two weeks and after those two weeks, check up on you not every day, but they come by for a bit. They are there to help out with breastfeeding and taking care of your child and checking on you. They also want to make sure you are doing well mentally and try to get you out of the house. I don't know the PPD rates here, but I haven't heard much about it, so I guess it isn't too big of a problem.

I don't see the harm in that at all. What's so bad about getting all the medical care you need after a major event?

It’s too much and too intrusive if you ask me. I have three children, and by the third I told the nurse if she came in my room while I was sleeping and I wasn’t dead, I would be walking out that very moment and going home. Needless to say, I think they came in all of twice. As for the midwives, that’s fine-most pregnancies don’t require quite the rigamarole they put people through if you ask me. But after? I mean, a baby isn’t rocket science. There’s really not all that much to learn!

As for me, I would have stayed in the hospital a month after having DD- but I know I'm in the minority. I just knew that those were the lasts nights of sleep I was going to have for a LONG time and I was so right. I would send her to the nursery every night and I have to say I don't remember the nurses bothering me at all for vital checks in the middle of the night either. I had my meals served to me, help with the baby, help with my own healing, got to sleep at night.. it was like a vacation!

5 weeks after having her I had to have surgery to remove my gallbladder as an emergency- they did the surgery at 11 am and were discharging me at 4 pm. I was begging to stay. I wanted to lay in bed, be given drugs in the IV and just sleep- I knew I was going home to a colic newborn who never slept after just having surgery. I would have stayed a week! They kicked me right out though!

Even though we all knew the city wasn't ready to start reopening on April 29th, when I heard May 15th I started to cry. Not so much for myself, but for the people truly suffering with job less, no money for food, depression, anxiety, and loneliness. My oldest, who will be 9 in May, is really starting to feel the effects of this. He has a hard time falling asleep at night, cries a lot, has lost interest in doing anything, and I have to force him to eat his meals.
I have not told him yet that there will most likely be no school until September. But I did tell him yesterday that the earliest he would go back is now May 15th. He lost it. He loves his 3rd grade teacher, and is devastated that he is losing out on this last part of the school year with her, and his friends. We were on spring break this week, which didn't help the situation. My kids are bored, agitated, cranky, and sad. We try to make it fun for them- but we have been in since March 14th. We are all so done.

I gotta agree. I felt safer there with the baby. Any little issue was a push button away or all your questions answered right there. I don't know about staying a month, but I wasn't ready to run out.
Agreed... they push people out too fast nowadays.
With my first I had a roommate so wanted to get the hell out bc her DH was staying in the room all night (even though they had a rule no overnight guests). For my second I had my own room and was WAY better experience.
As for the original topic. I have no clue when this will end, but hoping soon. I am a social butterfly and DH is such an extrovert. I need to get dressed up and go out to eat! LOL! Order a good Cosmo at the bar with a girl friend or just not have to clean up or cook! LOL

They also have, as I have learned in the past few days, that you can call an ambulance (I hear the sirens all night long) and they will help you at home with no surcharge. They will come here and check you, take your blood and do tests if needed and check up with you the next day and day after that. I can't really get routine check ups, but if I want to go to the after hours doctor (special hours; I went for a mouth infection and it took about an hour; got my prescription for the after hours pharmacy and it cost me 5 Euro), I can go. The hospital is sectioned off quite well, with smoking sections, lol.

The health system is set up into two parts (publin and private), but no one will be left with bills to pay at the end (it's a law here) if they have minimal health insurance. Thank God for the government help with that here. Maybe that is why our numbers are so low.

I hope after when or if this is all over they can take care of that in the US.

The hospital in Italy was even better. Totally free care because I hurt my foot and I have EU residency. They took Xrays and I was in and out in an hour.

Last I heard there are enough beds here in NY and Cuomo feels we are even at the point of being able to send ventilators to other states thar need them now. I think i read that in the paper this morning but everything is blurring together.

Right now he's in a nursing home so this is moot for now, but I just felt a urology office shouldn't be saying no patients. To me, that is safer than someone having to go to an ER.

Yes, but the ER here is in two separate sections here. So I'd just go there. That is what I would do in your case.

And of course they are being released early. Insurance companies realize how much they are losing. Are they doing home visits? They do that here. For example, if you give birth here, vaginally or Cesarean, you stay in the hospital for a week. Then you have a midwife check up on you once a day to help you for about a few weeks. They help you walk and teach you what to do, depending on your situation. I find it appalling that they don't do that there. They might help you do little things. Then you get your three or one year maternity or paternity) leave. Then you get Kindergeld (child money) or Elterngeld (parent money) until they are a certain age. Socialism isn't so bad.

If you want to leave, you have the free right to. But most people stay. The food isn't horrible and they help you after. I don't know, but if I ever had a baby (don't want them), I would want to stay and get all the help I could. They also do the well checks a few days after the baby is born, so you kind of need to be there if your baby is there. They just basically want to make sure everyone is fine and in good health before releasing you.

The midwife is the one who does most of the work here. You have your OB/GYN and get about three scans, but that OB/GYN is not at the hospital with you. The midwife is (depending on if they can at your chosen hospital) and whatever doctor is on their shift there. The midwife is comes to your home during and after. They will teach you everything about the birth and any questions you have. The OB/GYN visits are only for medical stuff. After they come everyday for about two weeks and after those two weeks, check up on you not every day, but they come by for a bit. They are there to help out with breastfeeding and taking care of your child and checking on you. They also want to make sure you are doing well mentally and try to get you out of the house. I don't know the PPD rates here, but I haven't heard much about it, so I guess it isn't too big of a problem.

I don't see the harm in that at all. What's so bad about getting all the medical care you need after a major event?

It’s too much and too intrusive if you ask me. I have three children, and by the third I told the nurse if she came in my room while I was sleeping and I wasn’t dead, I would be walking out that very moment and going home. Needless to say, I think they came in all of twice. As for the midwives, that’s fine-most pregnancies don’t require quite the rigamarole they put people through if you ask me. But after? I mean, a baby isn’t rocket science. There’s really not all that much to learn!

My guess would be...the governor will slowly start opening no essential business mid July with limits. I think this will continue through the fall and winter. Once there's a vaccine out I believe everything will go back to "normal".

This went on in China for about three months so I suspect we will be the same. I think it was WAY, WAY worse than the communist regime admitted to. Mid June should be back to normal operations. Because we are the epicenter, NY will probably get through this first. The sharpest curve, but the fastest recovery.

That being said, it will change society and how we do things for years to come. I think and expect a 2nd Great Depression will result, with TONS of small business closures. Your gym, nail salon, favorite restaurant, hair salon and any other mom and pop shop may be no more. Expect higher copays at doctor's offices, higher health insurance premiums, and more fee for service dentists. Higher unemployment and less prosperity than we've become accustomed to for sure.
