On another note... I am ANGRY that there are teachers out there just uploading YouTube videos and sending out worksheets. There are MANY of us who are busting our a$$e$, while teaching our own kids at home, who are DESPERATELY working to make sure that our students are read for the next grade.
This makes me want to cry.
My oldest child has had absolutely NO interaction. One phone call from the teacher since the shut down.
Youtube videos, worksheets, math links. This is what school is now.
The teachers posts a 5 minute video message to tell the kids what their work is for the day, and she doesn't even show her face in it.
I have reached out to her twice this week begging for some assistance with a concept my child is struggling with and her response was "have you watched the youtube videos I linked, because that has been helpful to many of the parents". YES WE WATCHED THE DAMN VIDEOS. They clearly aren't helping. So her follow up response was "ok I will look around online for some additional videos to watch that might help". What is the point of this teacher?? Are not the same youtube videos available for me to find?
I'm done. My children are done. I'm disgusted with my district right now. I'm disgusted with all of it.
Our second grade teacher says don't worry about it if it's too stressful. Um, it's school work - he needs to do it.

Our second grade teacher says don't worry about it if it's too stressful. Um, it's school work - he needs to do it. I would reach out to the principal then. My kids are in public. They are getting zoom face time with the teachers. Yes, they have YouTube videos, but many of them are of my kids teacher teaching the class lesson. They also have other teachers in the grade on YouTube. The way it work is that for fifth grade there are five classes. So the teacher makes either a home room video three days a week, or an in person live zoom twice a week so the kids can see and interact with one another. Then they have books that are on line, Kahoot games, math bingo, downloads of their math textbook, interactive videos where a short video is played and then you answer questions on it, or write an essay. For English they are writing essays about the chapter book they are reading.
I will say my daughter had a melt down over the social studies assignment yesterday. Because she is in fifth they were supposed to take the graduation field trip to Philly yesterday, so the entire assignment was about taking a field trip they are not going on. Apparently more than 3/4 of the class did not do it because the teacher sent out a note to yell at the parents. I flat out said that the assignment was short sighted. I would not have written to her, except for the fact she was blaming parents for their kids not doing the work.

Remote teaching is NOT even close to the same as being in a classroom. I spend upwards of 3 hours a day with my kids doing live instruction. We do a read aloud, we do a writing response, we dance, we do math, and its very interactive. However, I can tell you that there is NOTHING that can replace sitting down next to a child to teach them how to read, to give them feedback on their writing, to sit on the carpet with math manipulatives and tools and to have the students interact with each other, and help each other.
Now imagine, like what is going on with my DD's class, there is not even that. She has not had ONE minute, not ONE second of interaction or live instruction or a google meet or ANYTHING with her teacher Zero. You are saying the 3 hours you do a day of interactive live instructions isn't even close to enough. And thousands of kids aren't even getting that. Disgraceful.
Do you think that's because of the teachers or because of parents complaining there was too much and the teachers were told to cut back?
My kids' teachers are very involved with the kids. My 3rd grader has live instruction at least 3 times per week, sometimes 4. Both of my pre-k kids (one in public pre-k the other in private) get live instruction 2x week. The one in public pre-k gets assignments every single day to do. My 3rd grader is busy for most of the day. If I'm being honest, sometimes I'm a little overwhelmed with all of their work but I am over all pleased with how they have all handled DL. However, I know other parents in my district are PO'd by the lack of involvement of their kids' teachers.

I have. I was told that teachers are not expected to do any live instruction OR even recorded video lessons.
They are expected to check in periodically with the students. Apparently, for my teacher it means an email when I forget to submit my kid's work on google classroom.

No I don't think anyone compalined. It was like this from day 1 of remote learning. Not much work at all- in fact if I were going to complain, I'd probably complaining she's not getting ENOUGH work. I spoke to mom's of her friends in other 4th grade classes at the school- they are doing a google meet once a week at least. Her teacher is not. Someone asked on the stream in Google class about it- saying their friend in the other class is doing google meets- and there was crickets. No response. Her teacher is responsive to emails and questions and does try to help. But she's older and maybe not tech savvy or comfortable with it? I don't know.

They will have fever checks multiple times a day, and if your kid has a fever they will be sent home and not readmitted for 48 or 72 hours. NJ has said it is planning on A day and B day schedules with reduced head count, I am not sure what working parents will do.
this was announced officially?
I would love to know what working parents will do. If the answer is Daycare/after care then it will make no sense to have A and B days!!
Either that or an am/pm schedule. I know our school, administration has been talking of some alternatives in Sept. that will be a change for kids and teachers. They havent told us their plans yet, because they have to make a decision, and also wait on what Cuomo decides. it is what the superintendent of my school district mentioned in his daily letter that this is one of the possibilities they are looking into.
Oh ok thanks. Just wanted to read up on what the plan was if it was a official announcement.
If they do this I would love to know the plan of working parents!
If they say aftercare or daycares then it’s the dumbest plan ever! Just keep them in damn school then!!

Re: Schools- all or nothing
I don't understand the idea of part time school, getting half an education half-assed. Why would it be ok to send kids to daycare but not to school? A group of kids gathered is a group of kids gathered no matter what building they're in. So working parents are supposed to send their school aged kids to day care part of the week instead of school? Where are people supposed to get the extra money for daycare? Should they go without food? I'm assuming the school district would be giving tax refunds back to offset the cost of daycare then for the days the kids are not in school? (Yeah right!) The whole idea of part time school and distance learning for kids is ridiculous. September is a long ways away, but 6 months is enough time to come by up with a solution that involves kids being IN SCHOOL FULL TIME.

Exactly! If they can be together in a daycare or aftercare program, makes no sense why they can't be together in school.

It’s totally BS, I’m so sick and disgusted with this whole thing. I can’t believe I have two months to figure out what to do with my son and his education. It’s utterly ridiculous.

Ugh. Sounds like you got the lemon in the bunch.
I think we all need to contact our local officials and even Cuomo's office and express our concerns. Will it fall on deaf ears? Maybe but we have nothing to lose.

Schools- all or nothing
I just found out today that my second grader is in the only class in the school that isn't getting any sort of live interactive instruction. All of the other classes in his grade are doing it, one multiple times a week, and same with first grade. Kindergarteners have only had a few but they have still had them! I'm so mad.

Same for my DD- her class is the only one without any google meets or anything like that. Her teacher is an older woman and not very tech savvy it seems. But it's really not fair.

Definitely not. The teacher is around my age, she grew up with DH... There is a teacher that could be my mother there and she's even doing meets with her kindergarteners!!!
My friend has twins, one is with my son, the other has two meets a week. The other class is letting the twin in my son's class sit in for all the meets.
I"m thankful we are done with this stuff for now as of 6/16 since we still had one snow day and spring break... Only 16 more days to go!

Schools- all or nothing
My boys are in a private school for preschool and I have to say I’ve been impressed they break the class up and do 2 30 minute zoom sessions each week with the class (divided up into different sessions and they rotate so they can see all their friends) with a new concept taught, new on reinforced, follow up activity, Song and story. I get it’s only preschool but still they have made TONS of effort and send the kids projects weekly to work on. It’s so upsetting to have districts telling teachers not to teach or teachers that just don’t care because some are working so hard and spending MORE time working then they did in class and I feel so sad for them

On one of the FB groups I am a part of, a DOE teacher said her union rep told her DiBlasio already knows DOE schools will not open until January- but he doesn't want people to panic so he is not announcing it until July. Not sure I believe this...I know most people here do not live in NYC, but I do believe our schools will not open without DOE schools opening. The educational disparity would be huge.

All noise. These people literally know nothing. Union reps have no direct access to and info let alone info from the mayor himself. People like to talk out of their butts in those groups.

Oh, I 100% agree. People have talked to their union reps, school district superintendents, their friend who is married to the cousin of the head of all the schools everywhere . Someone else in that thread said Cuomo already knows no school until 2022. Uhhh...NOBODY knows anything. At all. Not even Cuomo or DiBlasio. Not a clue. HAHA

Schools- all or nothing
It is absolutely insane for schools to not re open in September. 1. The risk of death to children is beyond infinitesimal. Date from all over the world shows this over and over again. 2. There are multiple data points that show kids do not spread the illness ( data from Australia, french chalet study etc ) Re open with more frequent hand washing and sanitizing and other common sense precautions.
