It is all getting ridiculous. HBO has cut Gone with the Wind. Paramount cancelled Cops and Live PD is on hiatus. What are we allowed to watch anymore? Am I not allowed to see reruns of Archie Bunker because he was a racist? It is am sickening to me now.
Because racism shouldn't be funny. People should not be getting paychecks while making racist comments and then trying to claim they aren't racist. Yes you are. You said you what said. People aren't stupid. People show you who they are. And if they us they are uneducated racists, they don't deserve airtime and money.
You sound like you are very young.
What does this even mean? It sounds awfully condescending. Not to mention you're implying that there is something wrong with thinking racism isn't funny.
Nope didn't say that but "older" people are usually not as offended as the younger generation as they have heard and seen everything. Were these things right? Most likely not but no one really picked at things like they do now. Even Aunt Jemima is getting pulled. It is all just getting ridiculous.
History is history and should never be taken away so we can learn from it. The "younger" generation wants to get rid of everything that was bad.
I'm probably one of the oldest people on here and agree with everyone who thinks it is totally justifiable to remove things or people that "we" once thought were funny or were accepted as "normal." We learn and grow. We are not removing things from history books, but from commercialism and profit on the backs of minorities. It is not ridiculous to remove a racist symbol from a box of pancake mix. We have to change. We have made significant changes in the past - when I was born, a woman could not have a credit card in her own name, much less get a mortgage. Is it ridiculous that that has changed? Airlines advertised with stewardesses depicted as sex objects. Is it ridiculous that that has changed? Not to mention that there was a time when women couldn't vote or sit on juries. I am CERTAIN that many people thought it was "ridiculous" to make those changes as well. But if we don't move forward in the face of oppression and prejudice, then we truly are doomed to repeat history
Do you know the story of Aunt Jemima? The real person? No one cares about any back stories and history, just that they are offended.
Thank you for your assumption that I am uneducated and ill informed. I know the difference between the life of the SPOKESPERSON who played to role of Aunt Jemima and the CHARACTER the image portrayed. Apparently you don't. Yes, the real person, Nancy Green, was very accomplished, especially given the times she lived in. The character she portrayed, Aunt Jemima, is a stereotypical and racist depiction of a Black American woman in the time of slavery. So, eliminating an image that was intended to portray a Civil War era "mammy" is one more small step in the right direction.
Yes because people have turned away from buying these products because they were offended? I highly doubt it. This is not towards you but the entire thing as it is ridiculous.
Could you please explain why this is “ridiculous”? And how do you know that “people” - at least some - are NOT offended by this? What can’t we learn and grow? Do away with things that no longer serve a purpose and ARE offensive to some? Why is that a bad thing?
If none of this happened in the last month, do you honestly think all these measures would be taken to get these items off the shelves or changed? Why weren't they before a month ago?
So, we can't learn and grow and evolve? It's called progress. And if you're against that, I hope you don't have a credit card or car loan in your name. I hope you've never taken a mortgage out in our name or signed a lease in your name. And I sure hope you've never voted - because ALL of those things, for a woman, were seen as illegal and ridiculous at some point in our history. We move forward when we come to realize that oppression of any sort is wrong - even if yesterday we didn't realize it was oppression. TODAY we do, so we make changes. It really is OK to say, "I never knew...." or "I didn't understand...." and grow from new realizations

You keep harping on what “everyone “ thought yesterday. Why can’t things change? When we learn something is hurtful to some, why not try to be better human beings? Why are you so resistant to that? Like I said in my last post, if things didn’t change, you couldn’t have a credit card or a mortgage, or vote.
And yes, actually,I have thought about it before. Mrs Butterworth too. So maybe you should stop assuming you know who I am. Have had conversations about them with a friend, in the context of them being racist symbols, many years ago. And even if I hadn’t, I am open to learning why it is offensive - to at least some people. And since I’ve now learned more and have heard the voices of those who find it offensive, why in God’s name would I tell those people that it’s ridiculous to remove a symbol of something that is a sign of oppression to them. It doesn’t change anything in my world and makes someone else world better. So, yes, I’m more than good with that. Forget about what you knew yesterday. Look forward, grow, understand something you didn’t understand before. Why is that so horrible to you - really?

In response to valentines baby:
Actually I don’t think her view on this is a minority view. The problem is for the last 300 years, the voices of black people were not heard or cared about. It’s disgusting that I’m 2020 we can’t agree that everyone should be treated equally. If something symbolizes hatred, why is it okay to have a statue to remind people of this? Why is it a problem for it to be removed? It may not affect you personally- so just move on and focus on the fact that it can make other people feel more comfortable and included if it was removed.
It’s not about how it makes you feel. It’s about taking into account the feelings of others.
We’re all humans. We should all be treated equally. Black people should be given the change to have their voices heard. Our voices have been heard for the last 300 years.

I would REALLY like to know your answers to these questions

I agree. And I have thought of Aunt Jemima since 1990. Try listening to Public Enemy and “Burn, Hollywood, Burn.”
Step outside your bubble and see the real issues.

I thought Aunt Jemima was discussed many years ago and the thought process was to change her appearance so she didn’t look like a slave or the help? But to keep her as the representative and not remove her from the bottle all together.
Also I would like to hear people’s thoughts on firing of Taylor and removing their show. I feel like that is the one case where they missed an opportunity to really address this head on. I can agree with pretty much everything but don’t agree with that decision.

I am ALL lives matter so I agree with things being racist. I don’t believe history should be erased. I so believe people can and should be better to one another. Some of these statues are taken down with people not even knowing why they are doing it. Just a bunch of animals destroying things.

I am ALL lives matter so I agree with things being racist. I don’t believe history should be erased. I so believe people can and should be better to one another. Some of these statues are taken down with people not even knowing why they are doing it. Just a bunch of animals destroying things.
You are saying “All lives matter” and that makes you a racist. Then you say animals. You are a racist. Plain and simple. Your racism shows.

She’s completely blind to how racist she sounds and is. To say all lives matter, right now, when black lives are being targeted, is like saying why didn’t NY get the same aid as NOLA when Katrina hit, or why didn’t Chicago get the attention NY got when Sandy hit. It’s ignorant and disgusting. And apparently in this case, there’s no fixing that.
And she STILL refuses to answer the question, “WHY is it ridiculous to remove Aunt Jemima (a symbol of Civil War era oppression) from a box of pancake mix?” Please, valentine,, provide us with a well reasoned explanation of WHY? Not why my view point is wrong, or in the minority. Not your assumption of who I am. Why do YOU think it’s ridiculous?

I answered. If everyone was so upset how are they a multi billion dollar company? Doesn’t look like many were that upset enough to stop buying their products.

THATS why you think it’s ridiculous? Because a company had made millions off of this symbol in the past??? That’s a ridiculous answer, especially considering the company that made all that money doesn’t seem to think it’s ridiculous to remove that symbol. You have proven by your many statements here that you have zero interest in learning and growing. And since you’re so set on living in the past, I hope you’ve given up your credit cards and have no plans to vote in any upcoming elections.

History is taught in books. A statue or a symbol on a syrup bottle is not history. Statues that glorify someone who supported and fought for slavery are not history. You think we don't know who Hitler is because there aren't statues in his honor? You are so off base. And I'm sure you will come back with some other ridiculous and moronic "argument", but I'm done with you. Your mind is closed to any new. ideas Go crawl back into your cave and stay there

I can't copy it here for some reason but there is a meme circulating with a picture of a statue of a man on a horse that says:
"I, too, mostly learn history from looking at statues. People used to be green and quite large. Most of them sat on horses. The horses tended to be mad. Everyone had bird shit on them. People liked swords."
And I keep thinking of that throughout this post along with how it can apply to looking at packaged foods.
