Going by the numbers matters-so does weighing evidence and credibility.
If we follow the numbers, we see, on one side, an allegation by a named party that she was asked to manipulate data--large scale-systemically. It may not have been proven at a trial, but it's at least a real news story-not a conspiracy theory. We also have the President quoted a few times about his desire to slow testing/keep numbers down, etc. Add in the removal of data from the public domain, and concern is natural, not paranoid, even if no formal trial has occurred. It's just concern.
On the other side, by the numbers, you have an error, dismissed by the REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR as an innocent misunderstanding, not affecting numbers, but percentages, and since CORRECTED. This is posited by some on here to be part of a bigger scheme to make Trump look bad? Even DeSantis dispelled the idea that this was intentional. Then some added chatter about nameless, individual people who allege clerical errors. There probably are clerical errors in both directions--plus countless people who have had covid and never got tested. So...no. Forget proven--there is no substantiable, credible allegation of a large scale manipulation. It's a conspiracy theory--no names to attach to any allegation that even if proven, would amount to anything. (Unless there's more??)
Further, it's offensive to accuse anyone on here of wanting to overplay the virus. No one who fears this virus and isn't a sociopath wants to see misreporting keep us locked up longer; people want others to adhere to guidelines so that they can resume life. Plus, it's not like any overplaying of what we already know to be true is going to make this administration look worse to some hypothetical undecided person for whom dumpster fire to bigger dumpster fire is a move of the needle.
BUT, a few on here have consistently downplayed the virus and how easy it is to get, getting angry because they don't "feel" like being within six feet of someone w/ no mask isn't risky under some circumstances. So...no--it's not hypocritical of anyone to be concerned about actual news stories and whether the allegations being made, combined with what we know is true--while still demanding that others back up their allegations with actual sources before they upgrade them from conspiracy theories.
