Rapid Covid Test
How accurate are they? If you were exposed would you get a Rapid or go with the more invasive one?

Not very, know some that got false positives. I would take the one that takes a few days to get back the results.

Many false negatives. Which leads to false senses of security and going out and about thinking you are in the clear and safe when it turns out you really do have it.
I honestly think they should stop using the rapid for that reason.
Get the real one.

If you were exposed you would have to quarantine anyway and I wouldn’t. Other getting a test unless maybe I had symptoms.
That said I would probably just for with rapid

I was tested and got both- both negative. I would probably not rely on just the rapid test unless I planned on staying quarantined for two weeks anyway. The doctor told me if your rapid is positive, you are most likely positive, but false negatives are much more common.

This.
I know more than one person who was negative on the rapid and got a call a few days later that they were positive on the other test.
I don't like that false sense of security because you know people who come up negative on the rapid will be like- I'm in the clear- and not be careful even though you should be

Why are you getting tested? If you have symptoms, I’d get the rapid and then they’ll send it out for PCR as well. If you’re doing it because of an exposure And no symptoms , I’d do the PCR.

Not as accurate. I know someone recently that got rapid test and tested negative. Then got a PCR test that took a few days and came up positve

I did both when I was sick last month. Dr at Urgent care said because of my fever and the rapid not being 100%, he would be more comfortable if I stayed home til fever free and have negative from test sent out. 3 days later got the call that was negative too.
You hear so many stories. So who knows what you can trust anymore.

Its a family member that was informed a co worker he was working with last week tested positive. He decided to just do the rapid because he got test results same day instead of waiting 5 to 7 days for the other test. No symptoms but I am annoyed because we had a discussion about the rapid test not being as effective and he opted for it anyways. And no he isn't quarantining and plans to go back into work on Monday.

According to doctors I have spoke to, they do not trust rapid. I don't know what you mean about more invasive, it's same exact swab. It's how it's processed that's different. I have had 5 tests so far, they are no big deal. And since there are of course going to be people on this board, we know who, who tell me I'm wrong about rapid tests accuracy, let me tell a little story. 7 people so far out of my 23 person office currently have Covid. 4 of them had rapid tests that were negative. When PCR results came in, they found out they were positive.

This. 100%. I know several people who were negative on rapid. Positive on the PCR.
If the rapid says you have it, I feel like you can believe that. If it says you don't... crap shoot.

I don't personally know this for sure, but I've heard this several times now.
PCR is not the method of sample collection, it is how the sample is tested. You can have a PCR test that is not a brain tickler (3 out of my 4 covid tests were not brain ticklers, but they were all PCR.)
The PCR test magnifies and amplifies your sample - so they can detect a smaller amount of infection in the sample. (This is why it takes longer - they are replicating the sample). The rapid test just looks at the sample given and makes a determination based on it.
So if your sample is 100 units in 'size' and 1 is Covid positive - the rapid looks at those 100 units and checks for COVID in that. The test may not be sensitive enough to find that 1 bad unit. The PCR test would replicate your sample by say 10x. So then you'd have 10x the positivity so it is much more likely that it would be found. (All numbers made up by me.)

if you mind sharing, do they suspect that your coworkers got it from each other? Or is it just from outside activities and unrelated to working with each other?

Thanks for the explanation. I was thinking the same about how far in they take the sample from.. Anyways he is going to go back and get the other test taken.

My workplace does not believe in Covid. While we technically have a mask mandate, people don't wear it at all times or over their nose and their are no consequences. Our desks are very close together. The first two are related to each other, they insisted on doing Thanksgiving, over that weekend found out their sister/daughter was positive, still thought it was a good idea to come to work though they were waiting for test results, they were positive. Next one knew his daughter and wife was positive, had the blessing of upper management to come to work while waiting for test results, another one had rapid test, came negative, PCR came positive, they were also at work while waiting for results. Another dept had 2 positives, they allowed the other person in that dept to work whole week without getting tested, when that person finally did, guess what, positive. It has just snowballed, because my workplace won't put precautions in place and allow people to come in knowing they have been exposed. They also allow the general public to come in during this time and NOT tell them there have been 7 positives in the place. It's disgraceful and I am embarrassed to work for them.
