Getting rid of cable -Help!!
So this has been brought up before and I am sure if I search I will find an old question about this exact topic from myself so obviously I never did anything about it!
So here we are again.
I would really like to reduce my cable TV monthly bill.
I would be happy to keep the basic TV channels i.e CBS through Chanel 12 or whatever the basic news channels are. I believe that would cost me $25 a month. I would like to get rid of the other channels.
I would like to be able to have live stream access to CNN - how can I do that? is there an app?
I would also like to watch HGTV when the mood hits me and my DH would like the history channel, cbannel 21 ( BBC news and other british shows) and some soccer / golf ( 212 is the usual channel for that)
My kids rarely watch TV anymore nor do I so DH is the only one.
What are my options to watch live news? Do I stream it through a fire stick / via an app on my phone/ Via Sling?
Zero clues
Please explain as if you were explaining this to a kindergarten class ( that is probably insulting to 5 year olds as they for sure would understand this better than I do)

Getting rid of cable -Help!!
We do the AT%T TVnow app. Similar to Hulu with live but you have cloud storage to DVR things to watch later. Its $55/month, no news12. We had HULU with live but just switched bc my husband watches basketball and they didnt have the games he wanted to see. You can pick and choose your plan and add channels. We watch it on amazon firestick. You have to consider the cost of internet though. We pay 70/month for internet then 55 for the streaming and then we also have netflix, the $5/month hulu, amazon prime and disney plus. It adds up but the benefit is we just cancel the live tv app during those months where he doesnt watch the sports. I have not found a tv app where you can watch news 12 bit we get the network stations. Check out ATT, hulu, and sling TV. See what they offer and what's best for you. TBH alot of the HGTV shows are available on the $5 hulu and prime but you have to look into these individually to see what is best for you

You can stream basic cable channels through Hulu, YouTube, Sling, etc. They all have streaming cable apps.
CNN has their own streaming app too.
I HIGHLY recommend the Discovery+ app. It is great and has a TON of content including HGTV, DIY, Animal Planet, History Channel, Magnolia, Food Network, TLC, Lifetime, OWN and SO many more stations. It's only $4.99/mon and if you want zero commercials, only $6.99/mon. It is by far my favorite app so far, I am streaming from there constantly.
Because we recently bought a house we got a really great (cheap) triple play cable deal but as soon as that special ends, we are cancelling it all. We never watch regular cable anymore, we stream everything. Between Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Hallmark Movies Now, Discovery+ and the Peacock Network we have literally every possible network, show and movie that we would ever want to watch.
All of them offer free trials so sign up, stream them and see which you like.

Getting rid of cable -Help!!
We did when we lived in queens and just Internet was 50$ a month. We were able to get antennae tv and has Netflix and Hulu.
When we moved back to Long Island, the price of just Internet was not much less than the bundle and we couldn’t use the antennae so it was not worth it.
We saved over a hundred a month though ! It was awesome.

When we just have the hulu and netflix with internet it's still around 100 bucks

Getting rid of cable -Help!!
We subscribe to Fubo, which gives you most of the cable channels. Then we add on other streaming things monthly if anything is interesting. (Like we bought one month of HBO to watch some HBO stuff - we will cancel after the month and do the same with Showtime, etc.)

You can stream basic cable channels through Hulu, YouTube, Sling, etc. They all have streaming cable apps.
CNN has their own streaming app too.
I HIGHLY recommend the Discovery+ app. It is great and has a TON of content including HGTV, DIY, Animal Planet, History Channel, Magnolia, Food Network, TLC, Lifetime, OWN and SO many more stations. It's only $4.99/mon and if you want zero commercials, only $6.99/mon. It is by far my favorite app so far, I am streaming from there constantly.

I don't understand your comment, who charges too much as it is? The cable company? If you're cutting the cord with cable then paying just $4.99/mon for the amount of on demand programming you are getting with Discovery+ is pennies. It's actually a really terrific deal they are offering.
I'll be honest, we've been using various streaming apps for years now and I've never needed to talk to customer service. So not getting a live person on the phone isn't a deal breaker for me, that's kinda how it is across the board these days.
The fact is, with so many streaming options nowadays and many who offer package deals you can definitely save money and get all the channels you want plus have them on demand unlike regular cable TV.

We don't have cable and we definitely save a ton of $$. Not to mention even if we had cable, I'd still be paying for netflix and probably disney+.
TBH, even if we broke even, I'd rather the on demand streaming services. They are so much more convenient and we end up watching a lot less mindless garbage.

I know you can’t have any but if you want any kind of live tv which I see most people ask for isn’t almost $30 a month for that no matter which company you pick to use for stream. Then I assume some will get another steaming service and say that cost 15 that’s $45 right there.
For me just I have a phone and cable it’s costs about $80 a month now the $45 costs me $125 a month.
I always paid under $200 maybe my max was $170 and that was with several movie channels. Right now I pay total of about $140 for phone internet and cable and that includes HBO and showtime.
I feel like most I see who talk about dropping cable have more than 2 subscriptions.
But you know what I never did the research so maybe it saves but not sure it’s enough for me to drop the convenience of cable.

We have a lot of streaming services so at this point it *might* be a break even for us. But what I like about those services over regular cable is the fact that literally everything and anything you want to watch is on demand. I find with cable tv there are so many channels I don't watch or care about and they play the same things over and over again. But the amount of content at your fingertips when streaming is endless. 
I think it really all depends on what kind of tv watcher someone is, it is all personal preference.

We use firesticks for the tv.
We have Hulu which you can record your shows, watch live shows and so forth. $69 a month.
We have MagicJack for our phone. We paid $100 for 5 years. So that's $1-2 a month if you break it down.
Then we have Optimum for internet. $89 a month.
We also have Netflix but it's my inlaws account and we have Amazon Prime.
We have saved over $100-150 a month by doing this. We did it 3 years ago now i think and i wish i did it much sooner!!!!! Was afraid to pull the trigger. You won't regret it.

Bumping this. Hofstra, I've been wanting to reply for months LOL My mistake. I thought $4.99 was optimum, but it's on demand.
I was saying I wouldn't pay optimum any amount of extra $$ for any channels
