Schools and COVID
Several children in my children's school have been diagnosed with COVID in the last few weeks. Almost all were traced back to out of school transmission. However, a few of these children had a headache, or a runny nose, were sent to school anyway, and once the nurse sent them home to get tested, they came up positive.
As a working mother, I understand the annoyance of keeping your child home for every headache, cough, or runny nose. Any other time, I would agree. But, please think twice about sending your child to school with ANY symptoms. My child now has COVID. Nobody else in our home tested positive- DH and I are vaccinated, and my other kids are negative. From what we can gather, this transmission most likely happened on the bus.
Just a little PSA- we still need to all look out for each other and protect each other.

I’ve kept my kids home more times than I can count. But sometimes it’s hard to tell if your kid is sick or trying to get a free pass to stay home. Headaches are one of my kids ‘go to’ excuses bc I have no way of telling if they really have a headache (no fever, no rash, etc). Plus now it’s allergy season, ugh. My kids take allergy medicine but always have scratchy throats and congestion for like a month straight.

I am so sorry. I hope they are on the mend and feeling ok. You could not be more right.

That stinks and hopefully your child has none or minimal symptoms.
We have cases everyday but most of them are asymptomatic.

Luckily symptoms seem mild- low grade fever, slight cough, and just very clingy and wanting to be with me or DH cuddling with us at all times. My neighbor is a nurse in a pediatric ICU and said they are starting to see very, very sick children come in and be admitted with COVID.
I just want everyone's child to remain healthy and for us all to continue to look out for each other. This is a holiday week for Jews and Christians alike- everyone stay safe.

That is good. Hope they feel better soon. It sucks to be sick. Allergies are so bad now too so that is kicking everyone’s butt.

There are a lot of cases in our schools too. The last time there were close to this many the DOH ordered us to go full remote. Now we are charging full speed ahead to go back full time.
I don’t think it’s always the case of people sending sick kids but the symptoms often times seem to be slight and come and go quickly. So they could be fine when they go to school in the am but not feel well that evening.
Hope your DC feels better soon.

Agreed, that is not what I am speaking about. The principal needed to send out an email reminder to parents because children were coming into school coughing, runny noses, saying parents gave them medicine, etc. Obviously a child who is not showing symptoms would have no reason to stay home from school. But children are sent into the building clearly sick. That is what I meant. Sorry I didn't clarify.

No, I understood what you meant. Just saying that so many kids are asymptomatic when infected that it's almost impossible to keep it at bay in school. Just masks and distance of course but that's not foolproof .
either .
But yes, with allergy season now too I'm sure there are plenty of kids being sent in ill and the parents saying, eh it's just allergies.

It’s so challenging..hopefully you and your husband got tested as well. You can still get and transmit the virus even with being vaccinated. Hope your little one feels better soon!

My DD is remote, but my sister works in person in her school. She had a mom send a 7th grader with a 101 fever to school a few weeks ago. She gave her tylenol and sent her on her way.  Of course she was Covid positive and dozens of kids and teachers had to quarantine for 2 weeks.
ETA: The Tylenol brought her fever down for the morning temp check but she was feeling lousy again by lunch, got checked again and the fever shot back up.

This terrible story answers the other poster's question about how people, even in families that try to do all of the right things, contract covid. You can do everything right, and if someone else is going to engage in selfish, willfully blind (or worse) behavior, you are put at risk.

I'm a working mom too so I get the panic that happens when your kids get sick but we are in a freaking pandemic right now. You don't do that! This is almost criminally negligent in this current climate. It's beyond a lack of consideration.
It would also be helpful if employers gave parents reassurance that it is a non-issue if you need to stay home because your kid is sick and needs to be home.
To the OP, I hope your child has a speedy recovery. Sorry your spring break is ruined.

Agreed!! I think only one other kid wound up positive, but they were lucky! My sister was already vaccinated so she was fine. Luckily my employer is VERY understanding- in fact they actively DON'T want you in the office if your kid has Covid or was exposed, which makes all the sense in the world. But I know it's not like that universally, even though it should be. On the flip side, my brother's co-worker tested positive after working 3 days sitting 3 feet away from my brother and his boss gave him a hard time about wanting to go get tested and quarantine. It's situations like these that keep fueling the fire and keep the disease spreading!
