oven thermostat

so i have a thermometer inside my oven that sits on the rack. for a while now, i can get the oven to the desired temp, but then i open the door, put the food in, close it, and 20 min later the temp on the thermometer reads 100 degrees lower, and it stays that way until i raise the temp on the oven.

guessing my thermostat is broken.
has anyone had theirs fixed? my oven is at least 15 years old. just not in the mood to go buy a new one. might just buy a convection oven and call it a day

I found that in my oven that it never even gets to the temp I set it to. If I put it on 375, wait 30 mins and check the oven it is only at 325 or 330. So every recipe I start out +30-50 degrees. I try to limit opening the door and it does go down some. But it does recover and I hear it cycling on and off. I dont leave the door open long enough that its going down 100 degrees.

If you do decide that you want a new oven, it may be a while. We're getting our kitchen redone and needed a few appliances. I wanted the Frigidaire one with the air fryer and they estimated it would not be in for 6 months. They said most ranges are 3-6 months before coming in. One of the higher end brands had a special of 'buy the range get the microwave' for free, so we actually are getting a semi-professional range instead. Major difference is that there are ZERO electronics. No timer, no clock, old school temp gauge. So I went from 150% computer to no computer at all. Chat Icon I am hoping there are less temperature issues with no computer flaking out.

Re: oven thermostat

I have the same issue. I set it to temp so when it beeps I shut it off and turn it on again to set to same temp and of course it's much lower. Have to leave it on a bit and not open so much.

We actually replaced ours. Not with a new one, but pretty new. DH is a contractor so he just took a really good one out of a 55 plus home that was hardly used. I use the convection a lot too and find it gets hot quick and stays hot.

If you think you'll need a new range I'd consider ordering it now. We just replaced our ovens, cooktop and dishwasher and it took 4 months for the ovens and cooktop to come in and 2 months for the dishwasher. It's crazy how long things are taking these days. Definitely get convection, it's amazing. I've been a huge fan for years.

If you need a temporary solution, the Breville Smart Oven is an excellent countertop oven.

ETA - I would not bother repairing an oven that old.

Ditto Hofstra. We had an issue with the door of our oven door breaking and since it is so old, we decided to just get a new one. It is taking a month to get it as they said everything is backlogged with appliance delivery dates.

COVID backed up everything. Ugh.

The Breville is great, it got me through when my ovens were on the fritz. I still use it for smaller meals and bakes. Chat Icon Chat Icon
