these posts remind me of a video I saw recently.

it was people in the 80's being interviewed by a tv station.

People were furious about having to wear seatbelts while driving.

Infuriated about their rights being taken away (the right to not wear a seatbelt)

Their freedom to decide how they want to live in jeopardy. (to live or die in this case without wearing a seatbelt)

There were studies. You know the dummie commercials, right? Even a dummy knows .... When scientists & engineers come up with studies, based on the people they are studying, that info is pretty easy to interpret. it's data based - no ones opinion or feelings of burnout or rights being taken away, no, none of that is in these studies. But they sure are here, social media, at my local grocery store. These peoples have feelings about the pandemic that seem, unreasonable to me because there is ample information for the layman to sift through and understand what is happening.

So the anti-seatbelters on that news broadcast from the 80's....the resemblance to today's anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers is uncanny.

Seatbelts save lives, but people didn't believe that, because they *felt* like their freedom was being taken away. They felt denied their own rights to drive a vehicle the way they want to, despite the safety and saving lives.

But now, everyone wears them, because why? ---anyone?

Because they save lives.

Do some people die in a seatbelt? Unfortunately yes, they do. But we don't stop wearing them. We don't tell others to not wear them or question why they are wearing them.

So to question, put down, insinuate that vaccines or mask wearing isn't for the benefit of saving lives, is to be like the anti-seatbelters of the 1980's.

So sad in a pitiful way and uncanny. I wish I could remember where I saw that video.

The problem is that a study like that can be performed in a vacuum. You can take out any outside variables. It’s much harder to do this with vaccines and mask wearing. However I will say I don’t understand the problem with masks as masks are not anything invasive, similar to a seatbelt. However there is something extremely different about asking someone who is uncomfortable injecting a foreign substance into their body to do so. Personally I got the vaccine but I see a very distinct difference between a seatbelt or a mask and a vaccine. Surely you can appreciate the difference.

There is a huge difference. It's actually apples and oranges.

I am literally mentally done with all of this. No one knows shit. There is "scientific" evidence about every single side and there are about 100 sides to this issue.

Why the F did we bother getting the vaccine for. If mandates are not going to lifted then there was no reason to do it. This virus is never going away. We will be in masks for the rest of our lives if they don't stop with the mandates. Everyone knew that the vaccine did not make you invincible from Covid. It would just lessen the effects of it. So why is this such a new revelation? Children are not dying from this virus any more than other virus. We do not know true long term effects because it hasn't been around long enough to track that. They do not need protection from it. Adults have the option to get the vaccination. If they do not, then that is not my problem. There needs to be an option and a choice for people. I just started watching the Handmaiden's Tale and maybe we should take a bit from the show and start wearing clothes color coded with our vaccination status. It's coming to that. The constant talking about it is making me insane.

I'm with you. I'm done. This quite frankly is Bull$sh!t

But, but, but...you aren't ALOWED to be done. No! The virus doesn't care if you are done! It will be around for a million years until end days and until then you will wear your mask like a good little soldier.
And getting vaccinated no longer means you can stop wearing a mask...because apparently things have changed.
Yes, so shut up and be a good citizen!
Get your vaccine.
It's not that it doesn't work. It's just that other people didn't get it so that's why it doesn't work
Don't you understand?
Protect the children!! They can't get vaccinated! Yet!
Look at how sick the children are. We must mask them at 2 years old! Hell, we should mask infants as they emerge from the womb. Especially if the mother was not vaccinated. Mask the babies!
You can't be done. Ever!!

This is perfect!

Also, going back to another post, I’m wondering how many of you have actually done academic studies. Because I did for my honors thesis in college and what I realized is that there are many, many ways to manipulate data to get the answer that you are looking for. And yes, research at higher levels need to be peer reviewed and adhere to higher standards but if you think that data isn’t being “massaged” to get the answers they are trying to achieve you are beyond naive. This whole “I believe in science” narrative is getting so old because it’s all a bunch of people who actually have no idea how science and research studies really work.

That’s a somewhat insulting thing to say, tbh. I think a lot of people on this board understand how research works.

Insulting? Do you get how big of a money making business this is right now with covid testing and vaccines?

Whether you get the vaccine or not, if you're not thankful for its existence, there is something wrong with you.

And yes, to state that "people have no idea how research studies really work" is insulting to those who actually READ

Thankful will have to be seen since there are so many breakthrough cases and hopefully it will work better than we all expect.

it is more than reading numbers. Anyone can put down numbers, just like they forgot to mention many numbers for the deaths at nursing homes.
Do you honestly trust everyone in life?

Where did I say anything about just reading numbers? I said READ.

And if you think YOUR life right now is not significantly better due to the vaccine, as I said before, there is something wrong with you

Knowing how to read does not make you understand how studies are actually conducted in practice. Actually conducting a study enables you to understand how studies are done. If studies were conducted in the same way every time and there was no way to manipulate data, every study would come out with the same results. If you read about the efficacy of the vaccine, especially as it relates to the delta variant, you will see that the studies are all over the place.

And nothing is wrong with anyone who does not find that their life is significantly better or worse because of the vaccine. People have different perspectives on different things and it's fine if someone doesn't feel the same as you do. Many people have religious beliefs that prevent them from getting vaccines or believing that their life is significantly better because of ANY vaccine. Is there something wrong with those people? You need to stop having such a narrow minded view, believing that the way you live your life, and you way of thinking is the best and only way of thinking.

But you don't know anything about my background or of those on here. So to say I or anyone else doesn't understand that is insulting.

And if it wasn't for the vaccine, we'd still be living in a locked down society. If you can't appreciate the benefit it has provided to EVERYONE - regardless of whether you ever intend to get it, then I stand by my original statement

You are absolutely right I don’t know anything about you and I was not referring to you specifically. However, you are wrong, the vaccine is not the reason we are no longer under lockdown. The reason we are no longer under lockdown is because our government has decided that we don’t need to be under lockdown. There are plenty of countries with limited access to the vaccine that are not currently and have never been under lock down.

I think anyone who reads up on some studies and then considers themselves to be more educated and informed and decides that they are 100% right is severely misguided. No one should be calling anyone “stupid” or “ignorant” because they don’t share the same point of view that you do.

And OUR government decided we are no longer under lock down because of the availability of the vaccine. Many restrictions were lifted when a certain percentage of the population was fully vaccinated.

I have never called anyone stupid or ignorant for not sharing the same OPINION. But there are FACTS - things that are 100% true. When someone posts incorrect, unsupported or outdated information under the guise of facts, I have a huge problem with that

Actually lock down ended last summer. I remember restaruants opening for outdoor then indoor dining . I remember stores letting more people in and no lines to get in. I remember travelling to the Jersey shore and it looked like 2019.
More non essetinal businesses were open.
Bars were open.
Live music was happening with restrictions.
It did not feel like we were "locked down" last summer. Not even a little bit.
this was all prior to the vaccine.
I do credit the vaccine for mask mandates ending.
Once the vaccine came out, we slowly were able to get away from masks.
But now they are saying that's not longer the case.

Many people keep themselves on lock down and didn't go out much and didn't see people. For others, like ourselves, we went out to eat, saw friends and family, only wore masks in places that required it.

Now the vaccine they bragged about forever and that everyone needs to get, its not working and I actually just heard that Pfizer drops to 84% after 6 months.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/28/pfizers-ceo-says-covid-vaccine-effectiveness-drops-to-84percent-after-six-months.html

The minute things opened, I went out. I figured, if the State says it's ok, it must be ok.
I put my mask on and walked to my table and go out to dinner. I'll put it on to use the john and then back to my table. I kept my beach blanket 10 feet from the next person on the beach, but I went to the beach. I did what I was told, but I wasn't locked down anymore. Thank the good Lord for that too because I'd have been in a mental institution if I waited any longer.

Many things were not open last summer, like gyms, many small businesses, indoor dining in the city and LI etc. Ask any restaurant owner if they felt like they could operate "normally" last summer. You couldn't sit at a bar without ordering food -all things so many on here b!tched about over and over again. And Broadway, which I see has a very big economic driver for the city. With the way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if Broadway shuts down again before it even really opens.

Yes, things had somewhat opened up last summer and we could "go places" but there is no way last summer was "normal". Are you willing to go back to the way things were then? I sure don't want to

Many things were not open last summer, like gyms, many small businesses, indoor dining in the city and LI etc. And Broadway, which I see has a very big economic driver for the city. With the way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if Broadway shuts down again before it even really opens

My husband was back in the gym by June actually Cuomo allowed them to open after they threatened a law suit. Funny how that works. He was in the gym all summer.
Indoor dining opened mid June. I know because we were out to dinner every week - and only went 2 times outside. 2 weeks of phase 1- outdoor dining . then onto to phase 2- indoor at 50% capacity. By mid to late June we were dining inside.
NYC is another story- bunch of assholes running it.
Broadway is still not open as far as I know

I think most places were open. I got my hair and nails done as soon as they opened in May and June. We ate inside a restaurant in early August. Pretty sure the gyms opened but limited and masks.

We were dining indoors in June last year. And my DH was in the gym in June as well.
It's a wonder we survived actually. Very high risk.

these posts remind me of a video I saw recently.

it was people in the 80's being interviewed by a tv station.

True, but the point is the way people can close their minds off to things that have been tested by literally millions of people.

Of course, the distinction is there, but the rage and conviction from the freedom fighters - that's a rerun.

I can remember the anti seatbelters saying its my body, I should have the right to do what I want.

Uncanny.

His gym was not special. ALL gyms opened on LI in June. His gym was not breaking any rules. They had capacity and mask rules. They were open. Many people were too scared to go- but they were open.
And who said I'm not a fan of Broadway? I happen to LOVE Broadway
I said NYC was run by assholess- namely DeBlasio. I said nothing about Broadway. Stop making shit up
And yes...2 weeks of outdoor dining for Phase 1- then we were inside- late June- like i said.
I was definitely inside the Babylon Carriage House, eating dinner, INDOORS prior to July last year.

And really, does it matter?
We weren't LOCKED DOWN like you said.
Cowering in our homes eating take out and watching Netflix like April and May when nothing was open.

Knowing how to read does not make you understand how studies are actually conducted in practice. Actually conducting a study enables you to understand how studies are done. Ha right? I saw friends probably at least once a month or more since May 2020. Had a party of about 30 in October. Birthdays, NYE, Super Bowl, restaurants, stores, hair salon, nail salons, etc

You couldn't go and sit at a bar without ordering food; gyms in general were not open. Outdoor dining started on June 10th last year - not indoor dining until later. And just because you are not a fan of Broadway doesn't mean it hasn't affected everyone that works there - not just the actors, but anyone with a job there. And yes, there was live music, but not the way it was and is now. It was not "life as usual". Was it better than the previous months - of course, but it still wasn't "back to normal" - as so many on this board b!tched an moaned about all last summer. No way it was life as usual last summer

It certainly mattered to thousands of small business owners, restaurants especially, (and their employees), who could not operate at full capacity until pretty recently. And if you go back and read posts on here from last summer, I'm 100% sure you'll find plenty of posts complaining about how restrictive things were then

I think the difference is that many did not know what was open because they were afraid to go out and many still are.
I still saw my friends and went out with them and hung out at their houses.
Yes there were many stipulations at places but the ones who decided to take the chance, were able to still do things.

Ha right? I saw friends probably at least once a month or more since May 2020. Had a party of about 30 in October. Birthdays, NYE, Super Bowl, restaurants, stores, hair salon, nail salons, etc

People were only "locked down" because they wanted to be at that point.
Sure, things weren't' FULLY open - capacity restrictions, dumb rules like eating food at the bar to drink, so I would order a plate of fries and leave it there as a prop, etc.... but it was WAY WAY more open than the previous months.
People were even starting to go back to offices last summer. Many of my friends were back in the office.
The Jersey Shore was packed- tons of people on the beach, all hotels sold out, the streets packed.
So while the vaccine opened things more, we weren't locked down without it.

Many things were not open last summer, like gyms, many small businesses, indoor dining in the city and LI etc. And Broadway, which I see has a very big economic driver for the city. With the way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if Broadway shuts down again before it even really opens

You couldn't go and sit at a bar without ordering food; gyms in general were not open. Outdoor dining started on June 10th last year - not indoor dining until later. And just because you are not a fan of Broadway doesn't mean it hasn't affected everyone that works there - not just the actors, but anyone with a job there. And yes, there was live music, but not the way it was and is now. It was not "life as usual". Was it better than the previous months - of course, but it still wasn't "back to normal" - as so many on this board b!tched an moaned about all last summer. No way it was life as usual last summer

It certainly mattered to thousands of small business owners, restaurants especially, (and their employees), who could not operate at full capacity until pretty recently. And if you go back and read posts on here from last summer, I'm 100% sure you'll find plenty of posts complaining about how restrictive things were then

But you are claiming that the vaccine is the reason we are not on lock down now when in reality other states were fully operational, small businesses and all, prior to the vaccine. So the vaccine was not our salvation. We could have moved somewhere else and not had to endure any restrictions. We had to endure restrictions because of our local government. Is the vaccine a great thing? Sure it is!! It allows those at risk to have a little less worry. But that is not the same as saying without it we would still NEED to have restrictions on everyone else.

Yeah but worry now that after 6 months it will only be 84% effective. Wonder how many are kicking themselves now for being pressured into getting this vaccine.

You couldn't go and sit at a bar without ordering food; gyms in general were not open. Outdoor dining started on June 10th last year - not indoor dining until later. And just because you are not a fan of Broadway doesn't mean it hasn't affected everyone that works there - not just the actors, but anyone with a job there. And yes, there was live music, but not the way it was and is now. It was not "life as usual". Was it better than the previous months - of course, but it still wasn't "back to normal" - as so many on this board b!tched an moaned about all last summer. No way it was life as usual last summer

Thank you. This is what I was trying to say but maybe it wasn't coming out right.

Ever!!
