Re: how many months were you TTC before
I was ready to move on right away, but my DH wasn't. We both needed to be on the same page.
I knew basically right after I stopped BCP we would be challenged in this area. My first OB diagnosed me before even running any tests, handed me a prescription for provera and clomid and did not answer any of my questions or concerns. I ran fast from her.
My next OB 2 months later gave me a prescription for Metformin to try to regulate my cycles that way. We tried that for 3 months. It did shorten my periods, but they were still long (45 -50 days). When I finally got AF again in July of last year (3 months after my last one). She started me on Clomid and told us to try naturally for one cycle, then we would do 3 IUI cycles after that before moving me to the RE. I had a chemical pregnancy in August. After my BFN in September, we decided to go to the RE instead of doing two more IUI's with my OB. We actually did do one more IUI with my OB, because the RE wouldn't do anything until all our tests came back and they could see what was going on. Was glad that I did, because it turned out that the Clomid was giving me false positives on the OPKs, and I was ovulating at least a week and a half later than the +OPKs.
All in all, it took me 3 months after going off BCP to seek the help of my OB, and just over a year before moving to the RE.
I'm also 37 and my DH is 42
HTH!

Thank you
We've been TTC 8 months. I'm under 30 and my cycles are usually 28-32 days (ive been off the pill almost 1 year). I know they say that it can take up to a year to conceive even if you dont have IF issues, but i just feel like i should be doing something about it, not just sitting around waiting for another BFN every month.
I'm coming from a different background- so I didn't wait to see an RE before starting TTC. I was unofficially diagnosed w/ PCOS by my mom when I was 18 or 19 after she saw a special on tv and then an article online--- and officially diagnosed by an OB/GYN and endocronologist via bloodwork. Since I was diagnosed, I've been thru 8 drs... before finally finding the one that I'm with now. My thought is this- it can't hurt to go and see a specialist. The worst that can happen is they can telling you nothing's wrong, right? At the end of the day, you haven't wasted any time to speak of. GL to you!!

Re: how many months were you TTC before
I TTC for 6 months....Due to my age (37), I wanted to be tested to make sure all the plumbing was working. Turns out I have poor egg quality and quantity. Good thing I didn't wait any longer!

Re: how many months were you TTC before
At 6 months we had an SA and found out that we were dealing with MF IF. Soon after DH had surgery to repair his varicocele and now 6 months later we have finally started with the RE. We needed to give the surgery some time and try it on our own for a bit before going to the RE but since it didn't happen I am glad we are finally here. We will be having our first IUI for cycle 16.

Re: how many months were you TTC before
2 months (cycles)....I had a gut feeling and I was right...I was 30 at that time...
I always knew I was very fertile (28 days cycles, O on day 14). I also had CD3 bloods done before we started TTC and all came back perfect so I knew I was all good.
We are strictly MF and I am so glad we did SA after only 2 cycles because I would have been wasting time otherwise.

Re: how many months were you TTC before
I was 32 when I started TTC. My gyn wanted me to try for a full year but after 6 months I went to a RE. I was using OPK, temping, charting CM and timing BD perfectly. I had a few irregular cycles in the six months before going to the RE and I felt something was not right when women around me were getting PG fairly quickly and easily. At this point we are unexplained IF but we are going through medicated IUI's to try to get to our goal more quickly. I will be 34 soon and my biological clock is ticking big time.

Re: how many months were you TTC before
My story is a little different, I was ttc for 4 months and got pg but m/c then we tried again for 5 months and got pg again but m/c then after the second m/c my cycles became irregular. I went to my OBGYN after 6 months and she refered me to the RE. In total we were TTC for 1 year and 8 months before going to the RE

Re: how many months were you TTC before
When I was a teenager I had very irregular cycles, but was just put on bcp by my gyno and that was that. I always had in the back of my mind I might have issues when I wanted to have a baby. Fast forward 9 years. I come off birth control and my periods are regular for about 3 cycles. Then they get longer for two and then stop coming all together. I went to my gyno and I was told it was normal to go that long without a period. I waited a couple of more weeks and then decided to see a new gyno. My new dr. diagnosed me with PCOS and put me on metformin for 3 months. When that didn't work alone, she sent me to an RE. I wish I had known about my issues from the very beginning, I would have gone to see an RE as soon as I knew I wanted to TTC. I wasted about a year.

Re: how many months were you TTC before
A few years ago my GYN had put me on Clomid and after about 2-3 cycles I just stopped. I was frustrated so we said we'd just see what happens on our own. Well, after 4 years of using NO protection at all you would think that probability would have gotten us pregnant but no such luck. I had a panic attack last summer because I wanted a baby SO badly and in my head I wanted to be pregnant before I turned 33. (My bday is in March) I just felt like I was getting older and losing time. I saw my GYN at the end of last summer, we talked about the fact that I was hardly ovulating and rarely getting a period, and she said she didn't want to waste any of my time and if a baby is what I really wanted she said to go see an RE.
At first I was very upset and scared because I felt like such a failure as a woman. I know that sounds crazy but I just couldn't understand why it was so easy for everyone else to get pregnant but I had to go through so much. Long story short, seeing the RE was the BEST thing I ever did. I got such incredible care, he wasn't so quick to just throw me on Clomid, he explored all of our options with us and made us feel very comfortable with all of our decisions. I was put on Metformin and within 3 months I ovulated all on my own (NO Clomid thank goodness!!) and I took the trigger shot to ensure my egg dropped and we did an IUI just to increase our odds of conceiving even though my DH had no IF probs. Luckily I got pregnant.
So after all those years of nothing happening and wasted time with my other GYN a few years back the RE was able to get us pregnant in just 3 months. I know I am very fortunate and not everyone's journey is so short but if I had known years ago what an RE is and what they could do for me I would not have lost all those years TTC on my own.

Re: how many months were you TTC before
When we saw an RE we had 7 months of perfectly timed BD and 3 months of not so perfectly timed BD. Never had 1 pregnancy. I'm glad we went. Initial tests show e/t to be normal except for 1 issue and my doc suggests doing laprascopy. I'm just not ready to take that step yet. So we are trying for 2 more cycles on our own then I guess I'll make the leap to the lap.

Re: how many months were you TTC before
I was 38 when we started TTC (11/05). My OBY told me to give it 6 months. But, I used to be someone who always had plans away from home the day I would O (either my nieces would come for a 3 day visit or I'd be visiting friends/family out of state without DH). So, I kinda had to stop that. So, DH and I decided we'd give it another 6 months. But, in that time my brother (and only sibling) passed away. We gave it a few more months until we were ready and OBY sent me for an HCG (3/07). I got a bfp that month but m/c at 5w4d (they said most likely due to chromosomal issues). But, it said right tube was blocked and possible scar tissue in uterus. So, OBY sent me to the RE. Turns out I do not have blocked tube or scar tissue in uterus. So, I guess that was about 1 and 1/2 yrs.
I guess our IF is related to my age. I have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism (but mild). I thought I had an egg quality issue but now I don't know for sure. But, at 40 there are probably less good ones. DH is fine. My uterus is t-shape, but doesn't seem to be a problem according to RE and what I've read (more related to carrying to full term issues). My Mom had 2nd IF problems and was given something when pg with me. That may have caused it (could have been DES, which was a synthetic hormone - no way to know).
Wow, I just re-read this. I guess it's a lot of stuff going on.

Re: how many months were you TTC before
My dr. wanted me to wait a full year before going to an RE. After 9 months of TTC and not being successful on our own, my OB/GYN finally suggested and recommended the RE that we are currently seeing.
We just started seeing an RE a month ago and so far we have found out that it may be a male factor...
We NEVER would have known this had we not gone to see the RE. I am happy that I went now and did not waiting longer...

Re: how many months were you TTC before
After 8 months of being off the pill, 5 months of really trying with the CBEFM.
It was a little on the early side, but I just knew something was wrong. With my daughter, I got pregnant the first month we were trying, I miscarried and got pregnant the week later, so I just knew something was off this time.

Re: how many months were you TTC before
I was fortunate enough to be sent to one long before TTC. I was being treated for 18 months when I finally ovulated for the first time in years!!! The next month, we 'officially' started trying.

Re: how many months were you TTC before
I was diagnosed with PCOS about 6 years ago, way before TTC. I went off the pill in March 07 and had my first RE appointment in May 07. I knew I didn't want to wait.
